This is a quick video describing the basics of mental illness, causes, and recovery. The definition of mental illness comes from a presentation by Dr. Thomas Insel, the Director of the National Institute of Mental Health. You can find more about the description of mental illness as a disruptions in neural circuits in this blog post by Dr. Insel. http://www.nimh.nih.gov/about/director/2011/mental-illness-defined-as-disruption-in-neural-circuits.shtml

THIS VIDEO IS BASED ON MISINFORMATION; NONE OF IT HAS ANY SCIENTIFIC BACKING. I UNDERSTAND IF AUTHORITARIANS ARE SKEPTICAL OF THIS. BUT CHECK THE FACTS. ALWAYS. Mental illness is not defined as "disruptions in the circuits of the brain" by the American Psychiatric Association, the World Health Organization, or any reputable organization. The very idea that anxiety, depression or anger are "disruptions" is without any scientific merit. This is a terrible video, and one wrought with common misconceptions. Less than 1% of people label have ever had their brains examine. And who is to tell others if they feel or think correctly? How dare you make such antisocial, controlling declarations. People have a right to act and think any way they want to and never be declared "wrong" without debate. This is sickening to watch.

May is Mental Health awareness month, but how often is it publicized? None because there is still a stigma about something that affects millions of people.

By this logic, everyone is mentally ill in every regard because we are what we think, and if you say we are ill just becasue we can't control our thoughts due to "disruptions" then that's just the same as how everyone has no control over what they think

Thanks for sharing Dwain.  You might want to try some of the tricks from Dialectical Behavioral Therapy to help you get through the anger without self-harm.

Everytime I get angry I hit myself in the head till I bleed. I like it stops me hurting other people. I'd rather hurt myself.

If someone hits me and I yell at them, I am mentally ill, have a genetic inferiority, and will always be insane. That is what the state said. Now I am typing from my SRO because your fake science says CULTURE gets to dictate when people can be critical of abuse. Way to destroy my life.

Functionality is never determined by conformity or subjugation. This is a scientific fact. Clinical Psychology is the Science of Fascism, not the mind. The only disability that exists are human created labels that are used to punish people and limit their social mobility.

But it's all wrong. That's a fact. The APA, WHO and NIMH do not define mental illness in this way... not at all.
