As China, Russia, and the other so-called BRICS nations rise in economic and geopolitical power, interest in these countries' language and culture is increasing in the West. Dr. Thorsten Pattberg of Peking University examines the ways that translation of certain key concepts misrepresents history and culture. This is the GRTV Feature Interview for Global Research TV with host James Corbett and guest Dr. Thorsten Pattberg.

Chinese government: What can we do so that our people won't be pissed at us? Western Government: Who care about what people think, they are delusional , they think they got freedom of speech. Yeah keep on complaining. We do what we want.

@seekingjustthefacts The least the West can do culture-wise is to respect non-Western cultures, and thus adopt certain key terminology. Indian words like guru, pundit, and yoga have greatly enhanced our vocabulary. Why not adopting Chinese key terminology just as well? How about guanxi, the Chinese networking mentality based on Confucian values?

There's a fine line between imperialism, supremacism, and racism. Nah... nevermind. It's the same. Next game, can we play with better language? thanks.... ;(

The very concept of "Chinese" is incorrectly understood by the West as well. "Chinese" is not an ethnicity, it is a geographic and cultural connotation not based on ethnicity or language. China has several different languages unrelated to each other. It is only the non-phonetic alphabet which unites them since the same symbol retains its meaning while read in different languages.Mandarin is dominant, but not all Chinese are Mandarin.China is a cultural sphere of influence and civilization.

Chinese also use many proverbs in the language to illustrate important issues or events.

Bottom line. Western racism, bigotry and cultural imperialism, was the excuse to elevate themselves as "exceptional" to the rest of the world while diminishing their humanity. The arrogant term,"Third Word" epitomizes this. The "Third World" is actually the first and original world of humanity. Their civilizations came and gone for thousands of years, while Europe was still under ice. Today, the West's next generation will be forced to respect the humanity and cultures of others. As it should be.

Very interesting. Language is so important in terms of certain meanings, look at the juridicial language in the US and other states that is used even without telling the common man the right meaning...

Good report James .. thanks. I was a little surprised that you both didn't underline the deliberate destruction of cultures by the imperial west. Latest - very sad - example was what was done to Iraq's culture ... and raiding of the art treasures by western art dealers. There are some Interviews/Videos out there going into this more deeply.
