Dumping Mygun (5 месяцев назад)
I'm spraying mine with sugar water first
Peter Hartman (5 месяцев назад)
Dumping Mygun they just want to be with there queen. I highly recommend this 3 part series with Michael Bush https://youtu.be/vIkImAykzl4 . Dry sugar in the bottom of the hive will give them food, if they need it. The goal is the get the queen out. By the time she is out there will be comb and she will be able to lay soon.
Dumping Mygun (5 месяцев назад)
But they like sugar water... and I don't want them to fly away on me.
Peter Hartman (5 месяцев назад)
Please don't do that. It just adds another layer of stress to them. Sugar water can be useful in an active hive but it is not needed with a new install.

I'll be doing this tomorrow. Thanks for sharing this with us!
sallie Tillman (1 год назад)
I see this his first install bees, I but mine in the same way, until I find out you spray them down with sugar water.
sallie Tillman (1 год назад)
Peter Hart I was just saying I install my first package of bees like you doing, my package bees were in air I had half in box and the other half in the air, Last week were my second package of bees and I spray them down with sugar water they were very calms. I like spray then better.
Peter Hartman (1 год назад)
Why did you spray them with sugar water during your install? I know that is a technique for getting into an established hive, but I am not familiar with doing that for an install.
SHARMA (1 год назад)
In future, wear light colored gloves. Not recommended to leave an open jar with liquid inside the hive. Wondering how it worked out?
Peter Hartman (1 год назад)
The beads floating on top worked out pretty well in the jar. There were about 5 casualties over a weeks time though. For the most part I avoid feeding bees. I am trying to create survivor bees.
Follow Me (1 год назад)
Hi, I have my first packages on order for delivery next week and I've been watching "first top bar package install" videos to learn. When I saw you in a t-shirt with no gear on I thought "yeah, that's the way I got to be, fearless, because after all, the bees don't actually have a hive to defend or anything, they should be gentle". That line of thinking changes when you put on your veil lol! Thanks for putting me back on track.
Peter Hartman (1 год назад)
Yeah it is one thing to be stung on the arm but it is a completely different to get stung by the eye. Have fun with the new hives!
Skip Hill (1 год назад)
As somebody said in the comments, a clean paint brush works great for adgusting the bees, I also recommend as somebody else said that after they are building comb, & the queen doing her thing. that you use a bee feil with a built in hat & some bee keeper gloves....
Wandering Chicken (1 год назад)
Perhaps you have already done this since this video was made, but I would suggest a "runway" for the bees to land and hang out on in front of the entrance holes. It would make it easier for them to do their bee dance too. Just give them a little strip of wood, maybe 1"-2" wide.
Daniel Weston (1 год назад)
Runways are good places to observe Bee activity and for warm up during early spring weather. However humans think of bees as STOL planes but they are VTOL it matters not to them for landing if the wood is rough.
Wandering Chicken (1 год назад)
SpiritBear12 bee hives in the wild don't have removable bars for extraction or inspection either.
SpiritBear12 (1 год назад)
Bees don't need a runway. Bee hives in the wild don't have runways.
Peter Hartman (1 год назад)
I have not installed a runway to discourage mice. So far the bees seem to be fine without it. When it is warm out the congregate on the outside.

what of queen bee is working? hello from mexico
Leah Hull (2 года назад)
I love your top bar! love the metal roof!
john abruzzi (2 года назад)
i want to start beehive like you did. my question is do you keep the queen in the beehive all the time?or just a few day?
Peter Hartman (2 года назад)
The queen stays. Just the cage comes out once she is free.
Danielle Ashworth (2 года назад)
I will be getting my first bee package next Sunday and so will my sister as well. Hopefully I can get a video of doing it as well.
Peter Hartman (2 года назад)
+Danielle Ashworth Great! Bees are very fun to have around.
Megan Evans (2 года назад)
Did you buy or build your hive? I'm interested in started my first hive and I'm thinking of going with a top bar. What would you suggest I do to learn enough to start my own hive?
Skip Hill (1 год назад)
He has also been very helpful with advice and recommendations...
Skip Hill (1 год назад)
I'm a first time bee keeper also, I orderd a topbar hive kit off of bay, got it from: superior bee supply, he sells them on ebay, I can whole heartly recommend his hives, he's more expencive than others BUT,  you get what you pay fore, as he says all you need to do is install the bees with his hive, has a number of video's on youtube to walk you through the put together procces, you can see my hive @..skip hill topbar bee hive 2016...
Megan Evans (2 года назад)
+Peter Hartman Ok thanks so much for the advice! Your hive is beautiful, you did a great job!
Peter Hartman (2 года назад)
+Megan Evans I built my hive. I read/watch everything you can from Micheal Bush. He is the most sane bee keeper I have run across.
Sidney Patin (2 года назад)
After you dumped the bees from the box into the TBH, did you close the top and leave the entrance holes open? Leaving them open lets the stragglers get into the hive, but it also leaves the "door" open for the queen and the whole hive to escape and go somewhere else. How do you keep that from happening?
Peter Hartman (2 года назад)
+Sidney Patin I think adding a queen excluded to the front of the hive for a week is a great idea.
Sidney Patin (2 года назад)
Yes, the queen was not enclosed in the queen box.  The hive was successful when I trapped them inside with some food.  But some of the stragglers that couldn't get into the hive died. That was a bad part for me.  I was thinking about putting some kind of queen excluder on the entrance holes so I could leave them open and the worker bees could come and go as they please.  They're not going anywhere without the queen and the queen stays trapped inside.  That might work ok.
Peter Hartman (2 года назад)
+Sidney Patin Interesting. So it sounds like you tried the direct release of the queen like Mike Bush recommends? I am also curious about the queen. It is my understanding that the 3 days or so that the package spends with the queen that they generally accept her. Was the hive successful once you trapped them inside?
Sidney Patin (2 года назад)
+Peter Hartman Yes, we did that some years ago and the queen decided she didn't like the accommodations and flew away, so of course the whole colony flew away after her. It was like watching a $100.00 bill with wings flying away. Then we started to install as many as we could into the hive (using swarms collected around the neighborhood) and plugging all the entrance holes, and leaving some sugar syrup in a gallon bag in the bottom of the hive. I felt sorry for the ones that got left outside, but after a few days the bees inside started making comb and that was my clue to open the holes. Then they stay in the hive. I am looking for another way to do it, but that's what we do at least for now.
Peter Hartman (2 года назад)
+Sidney Patin Yep! I left the entrance open. Shortly after the video bees were at the entrance fanning the sent out to let everyone else know where the door was.
Anne Brasher (2 года назад)
Thanks for the share! Great. Is there any reason you didn't do this at night? Bees don't fly in the dark. Just wondering
Peter Hartman (2 года назад)
Bees need to be able to fly and orient to a new home. If it was dark many of them would not ever figure out where the hive is, at least that is my theory. It is standard procedure to move whole hives after dark though. Thanks for watching.
Tomi Bairz (2 года назад)
When placing/moving the queen in or out of a new colony, you should do that really fast as she should always stay at around 35C / 95F. If this temperature is not respected for several minutes, the queen can suffer damages (in the future laying less eggs than normal) or even die. So anybody new in beekeeping please do it faster than in this video.

Thank you for posting - and showing a clear image of the "Wolf Creek Apiaries, LLC" tag. Thanks to your consideration I went to their site. Great info.!  I'm now confident about starting Bee keeping and Top Bar hives. I'm looking forward to seeing your follow ups. This vid has tips you might like about keeping the swarm under control while releasing.. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YVW8CErDpjQ
Father of Four Homestead (3 года назад)
how many stung you as you did that? That takes some balls to do it I bet.
Sidney Patin (2 года назад)
+Father of Four Homestead Bees in a swarm do not sting. They have nothing to defend. But after they have comb and honey in the hive, better wear a hood and gloves or you will get stung. Ask me how I know. :-)
Brandon Adam (2 года назад)
+Peter Hartman you did a great job being your first time doing that.
Father of Four Homestead (2 года назад)
thank you for your help.
Casey Wagner (2 года назад)
Cool :) I'll be building a couple of top bars over the winter. Check out the book Top-Bar Beekeeping by Less Crowder. There's also a youtube video of the same name by him on here that's a great resource.
Father of Four Homestead (2 года назад)
+Casey Wagner cool I didn't know that.I am actually thinking of getting a hive next year.
