This 1980 non-turbo 300D was driving like it had an anchor dragging along behind it. Sluggish acceleration and poor top end. How many seconds to go from 0 to 50 mph? You will get to see it live. A major problem was found very quickly. You won't believe your eyes!
My Dad bought a new '89 SD and drove it for 20 years before giving it up and it was still in great shape. Had he told me he was selling it it would be in my barn. There are few vehicles better suited for long journeys ever manufactured.
Getting him to do those simple things, change a filter or two, was like putting down a favorite horse. He was wasting so much money on the easiest stuff.
In Europe absolute base taxi model was 200 diesel, but most of them were 220 diesels. 240 diesels were “hot rods” and power steering was extra cost option. So hardly any of them had it. Rarest luxury was 300 diesels.
The previous owner obviously skimped on basic maintenance. I can't believe how dirty that air cleaner was. I prefer to use genuine parts myself but not all aftermarket stuff is bad especially the parts made by OEM suppliers which are the same as genuine parts in all but name. Already, you have positive proof that basic servicing and getting things working 100% can restore those lost horses. Does your diesel purge do the same job as a decent fuel additive in the tank? I saw it in one of your other videos when you were trying cure a smoke problem.
Thanks for posting this I will watch all parts you post. I have a 240 D and a 300 TD Wagon that have been sitting a few years without running. So this Spring I plan on getting them going again. The wagon the seat springs need to be redone. Leather is good. Not sure if you have a video on that type of repair? Also I bookmarked your website.
MD programmed their auto tranny to start in second gear UNLESS you floored it at takeoff. I had both the non turbo 300D and later the turbo SD300 and both did it this way, the first car clearly lacked power and need a deep gear to get going, it was there but you didn't get it unless you used the kickdown. the SD had power but LOTS of turbo lag and using the lower gear would get this going sooner as well as helping the engine out while it was waiting for turbo power to develop. It you floored either car you could lay down a smoke cloud that would make a garbage truck proud.
