take the used volvo to a volvo dealership instead of a regular mechanic. those extended warranty policies can be useful in the right circumstances. buy a policy that other dealerships sell and you will get better results getting factory work and those policy writers will make money off of putting a new and expensive stuff in your extremely used car. it only works if you buy one of those cars knowing that it has a problem explicitly addressed in the extended warranty and the maker of the car also does business with the same extended warranty provider. for instance, your local volvo dealership might have business with the same warranty provider as the toyota dealership that sold you the bruised volvo. that warranty service will strike a deal with volvo to replace major components with newer gear and then re-man the old stuff and sell that. but a brand new car? no, those are just worthless. they're just counting on the fact that the buyer will make the payments no matter what so throw a few thousand on top of the loan and it won't make a difference as it lines their pockets. it's the sales game. it probably wouldn't do any good for any car with under 50 thousand miles since you will be able to perform any preventative maintenance needed to make the car last beyond even an extended warranty. if you find a nice used car but it has a lot of miles on it like 150 thousand or more, you might want to consider hedging a bet that the drivetrain will have problems within an extended warranty period and you can get new factory work done on it for a low deductible.

this is false, lol Also new car warranty and used car warranty cost the same. Comissions definitely not 50% even though that we be great. You want the real truth from someone who sells extended warranties, DM me on Instagram @vitaliy_kondrya

This is not always the case.  I got the extended warranty on my sons car and it paid off in spades. Someone had disconnected the oil pressure sensor before putting it up for sale and within 60 days the engine froze up. Replaced with an engine with fewer miles on it than the original. Six moths later , it lost a rear seal on the rear end......and again replaced. You are correct about the dealer making money, but think about it. If they are selling you anything, somebody is making money.

Wish i had seen this about a year ago :(
I bought an extended warranty for my last car and it came in handy when my head gasket started leaking. Totally came to almost $1300. My warrant cost me $2000. But I also used it for a timing chain replacement, cv boots, weatherstripping that was leaking, a crank position sensor, and a bad fuel pump. Car was a 1 owner 2012 Malibu with 54,000 miles. I bought it in September of 2014 and just sold it earlier this year. The warranty paid for itself 4 times over

FCA offers a "lifetime" warranty. No one else does. It of course means the lifetime of the vehicle not your lifetime. So when the cost of the repair exceeds the blue book value of the vehicle they cut you a check and that is that. However in the meantime they will fix pretty much everything except regular maintenance of course. I wonder what Scotty might have to say about FCA's lifetime warranty specifically.

The company only paid $400 towards the repair of my motor they held onto my $2,500 for three and a half years and it was only a $400 difference that they contribute now I am stuck what the parts on the floor at the dealer they told the dealer to break the motor down to failure to find out what the problem was which the dealer said he didn't have to do to find the problem now I'm stuck with the break down and put back together Etc $10,000

Ok but I need to say something. I bought a used subaru with 180,000 km, in Canada there's a company called lubrico warranty. I paid something like 2 grand for the 3rd party warranty, and it was not that hard to understand. Within a month of having the car it needed 2 new head gaskets, cylinder head machining, and while they had the engine apart I got the timing belt and parts changed. It was over $5000 worth of work in the end and if I didn't buy that extended warranty I'd have been screwed. At least with a subaru, I would never buy one without a very solid warranty, warranty everything you can on those cars.

Very misleading...the BMW extended factory warranty is 6 years 100,000 miles and will save you a fortune in repair costs....buying a BMW without it is a bad idea....same with any German car.....
fatboy19831 (12 дней назад)
Dead on advice. With BMW and Audi do the math. See how your car runs under warranty. If you start having problems get rid of the car before the warranty is up or buy the manufacturer extended warranty. You do not have to buy the extended manufacturer warranty when the car is new. You just have to buy it before the factory warranty is up. You can shop around to get the best price. Stay away from all third party warranties. They almost never pay up. One exception is Geicos new car extended warranty. It is only a few dollars a month and covers almost everything for 100,000 miles. The problem is it only kicks in AFTER the manufacture warranty is over. So you are paying them for 3 to 5 years for nothing. They most likely offer the service so you keep buying insurance from them for 100,000 miles. My sister had an problem Mazda Geico payed thousands for repairs. Only a 75$ deductible and never had a problem with an dealer taking it. Audis regular maintenance warranty is excellent also. It covers everything except tires and the clutch. Do the math to se how much you will pay for regular service over the next 5 years on an Audi. The Audi plan should work out to be much cheaper. With Toyota , Honda and Subaru his advise was dead on. Bank the money for the extended warranty. Buy the time you start needing repairs you will be far ahead of the game. If not just sell your car. On my Japanese cars I usually don't need any real work till 180,000 miles or so. Even then maybe an alternator or struts that would not have been coverd anyway.

When buying a car is a good idea to save a $50 to $100 into in to the savings box every month,(or $100 to $200 for every 1k miles) by the end of the manufacturers warranty make the math how much money you would have in case the car needs repairs.

Get a good warranty after the manufacturer warranty expires. Like Toyota platinum warranty. I bought it for a Lexus ISF I bought in Sept of 2017 took it to Lexus for an Issue and they found a leak in the manifold. $3,500 job at the dealer but warranty covered it. It's very easy to see what's covered in the plan. I wouldn't recommend it on a new car though.

i got the extended warranty for my 2014 Tacoma i just got and the master cylinder had a leak. it was replaced with a $250 deductible. it would have been $500 if i had to pay someone. but the Toyota guy said i had a good warranty. they didn't give him any trouble. i bought the truck from a Chevy dealer. 50,000 miles. and the warranty covers just about everything. i think it's great.

Fuck me running. . the dealer sold me a 2,000 dollar warranty which means the salesman pocketed at least 1,000 from the warranty alone.

I bought extended warranty for both my Mazda’s (from Mazda) and the dealer I work with they are good about it. I got new engine mounts on my 2012 Mazda 3 with 150,000km because I want happy about a small bump from the one on the firewall getting a little old. At least with Mazda and the dealerships I dealt with I always get any little issue fixed, best $1200 I ever spent. The dealer I use is by my work, I live 90km from work so when there is any job that’s over 2 hours I get a free loaner or rental because I have the extended warranty, it just charged out to Mazda. Also my wife’s CX5 has unlimited milage warranty for 5 years from Mazda but we got the extended because base is 3 years bumper to bumper and 5 years power train, the extended warranty gives almost bumper to bumper for 5 years. So if a sun roof craps out or one of the safety sensors I don’t worry. But yeah I would NEVER buy 3rd party warranty. Manufacture or bust. Over all I feel at least on my Mazda3 I got my money’s worth, and that was only up to 160,000km. We driver a lot in my house, we commute far so $1,200 for 5 years of peace of mind is worth it. It’s about $240 a year which isn’t bad if you need something that costs a few hundred plus labour replaced after 4 years.
William Ruiz (24 дня назад)
Gotta say I disagree, I got the warranty, and with one use, I got my money back (broken, ac motor and broken door locks, and broken shifter i think it was) and it was a brand new Toyota Corolla 2013, and not 4 years later all those things broke, and they fixed it all, I say get it, cuz it would have cost me like 4k at dealer, and I spent less than 2k on the warranty

Car repair warranty companies have had a long history of being a flash in the pan before going under! It has been their business model, for ages, to make away with the money. Look at it this way: If you have a vehicle, you have to maintain it. These car warranty companies just insert themselves into the equation and siphon off part of your repair/maintenance money, pretending that you are buying insurance that spreads around your risk among all their customers. Ain't so! They just cut theirselves in on a piece of your action. You're not going to beat them at this game! Save the money you'd spend on these warranties and pay for your own maintenance. You'll be money ahead in the long run! The video's author is 100% correct!

I used to work at three new car dealerships. Extended warranty's are big scam. Just another up sell to suck money from the customer.
MrChad97Z (27 дней назад)
That's right. If you buy the policy, when you take in for repairs, They always disqualify you. At a minimum they ALWAYS push back on doing the repair, particularly at a Chevrolet dealership. But I even had David McDavid Acura decline my seat belt warranty because the Shop manager said I never get my Oil changed there, so why should he do me any favors! And that is an Acura in Plano, TX. But most the time, Honda and Acura have much better service than that.
Glenn Oropeza (27 дней назад)
I did buy an extended warranty from a dealer because today's cars are too expensive on repairs not to. But some dealers can rip-off people with another type of warranty, vehicle maintenance warranty. I'm not one to pay $2000 dollars just for tire rotation and scheduled oil change and other miscellaneous check-ups!

I'm not entirely sure I agree with your view point. I recently purchased a 2017 civic sedan and got extended warranty and I have the pamphlet that shows what's not covered and it's a total of 14 parts that are not covered. But I did my own research of the car and cost to fix just basic things that are covered in my warranty and I think it's worth it especially if you're going to keep the car for a long time which I intend to do. Love your videos
billybassman21 (28 дней назад)
Home warranties are the same. Got one when I bought my house and they wouldn't cover my water heater. It was heating, but only luke warm, but they said since it was heating there was nothing they would do. On top of it they charged me a $60 service charge that I never paid. My friends A/C went out and they still had to pay for a new one, it only covered repairs, not a replacement.

I have to disagree with you on this one. I purchased a Zurich warranty on my wife's car which is a 2013 Nissan Rogue. I have never used warranty for over 4 years but now the vehicle has 65000 miles and I have a few problems that have occurred and the warranty has backed me 100%. I paid $1,300 for the warranty and I have only used it three times and it has paid for itself. So I think the warranty should be left up to the individual because most Vehicles only come with a 3-year 36000 bumper to bumper and some offer 5-year 60000 mile Powertrain. But most people don't realize that the powertrain warranty does not cover your air conditioning alternator water pump Etc

So I'll never buy another one again.

Scotty - these are really good points, but every extended warranty I purchased were the all-inclusive bumper-to-bumper warranties costing no more than $10-13/month, backed by the dealership. Basically if I took the vehicle to the dealership where I purchased it, they will fix whatever is wrong without a deductible. If I take it to a SAE mechanic, I pay a $100-200 deductible. For every vehicle I owned (never owned a Mercedes, Porche, or any other luxury vehicle), the warranty has paid itself back and beyond. I had a Mercury Mountaineer that had a couple of issues - a fuse kept blowing when trying to start it (this took 1.5 days to diagnose where the issue was at, so the hourly rate for labor alone at the dealership paid for the warranty), and the 2 front wheel bearings went bad (the front wheel bearing/hub assembly, for a Motorcraft branded one, is almost $400 each plus sales tax, and charged 2 hours of labor for each side). For the warranties I got, it covered pretty much everything except for worn tires, worn brakes, oil changes, radiator flush/fills, a/c flush/fill, battery replacement, and anything that was damaged due to misuse or neglect. The only caveat is that I had to make sure that the vehicle was on a maintenance schedule for owner accountability. Anyways, I just recently subscribed to your channel and really enjoy your videos. Keep up the awesome work!!

Back in 1990 an owner of several Midas auto mechanic shops told me candidly ..."...if vast majority of the population drove Japanese vehicles like Toyota, Honda, Nissan, then we have to close up shop because other than their regular maintenance these vehicles are built to last as long as the owners keep up with their maintenance..." Imagine that, the owner of Midas told me that back in 1990! FYI, on the other hand a 40K vehicle costs between $2700 to $3200 for the raw materials, and after all said and done the finished product including labour costs the manufacturer roughly 8 to 10K! Ask yourself...why many manufacturers give anywhere from $500 to 12K in rebate? They are still making a KILLING.
gratefulRed69 (1 месяц назад)
@ $.77 of every $1 of profit on the sale of a NEW car....is made in the finance department. Franchise dealers practically GIVE new cars away at COST in order to sell units. So, their only opportunity to make profit is on the transaction in finance department (extended warranty profit, gap ins profit, interest rate spread, wheel&tire, etc). The products themselves are not necessarily "bad"...rather...the extreme MARKUP is bad. All of those products have value...but they lose value based on the ridiculous mark-ups the finance departments use. The problem with Scotty's recommendation to "just put your money into savings and use THAT to pay for repairs"....is that people don't HAVE any f'ing money these days. That's why the average American has $17K in credit card debt, why people are taking car loans out for 6, 7 and 8 f'ing years!!! Go do your research Scotty....90% of Americans can't write a $2000 check that "is good" in the case of an unexpected failure...of any kind (car failure, household appliance, etc). So...they put those charges on credit. So...a lot of people truly need to prepare for costly repairs (definitely on Euro cars) and extended warranties with reputable companies, when purchased at reasonable prices....are not a bad option. Consumers now days are practically broke, financially irresponsible, lack financial discipline and generally make poor economic decisions. So..their is a need for these kind of policies....but just do some homework and negotiate to buy at a fair price. There are thieves in all industries. Plenty of crooks in the auto repair business, trust me. I know of shops that routinely tell customers they need to replace "all 4 power window regulators", when only one has failed. Shops that charge more hours for the job than what ANY labor guides call for. Shops that charge for tear down to diagnose, fail to properly fix the problem...and then still require the customer to pay of the cost of the tear-down. I could go on and on. Bottom line...customers need to do their due diligence on selecting reputable shops. Do their homework on what the real value of cars are BEFORE they go stumble into the dealership/used car dealer. Talk to their credit union or banks regarding financing terms/costs, etc BEFORE going to the dealerships. Be informed and make educated decisions, period.

Well going to have to call you on this...but only some of it...First off it's none of your business how much money the sales guy makes, many occupations have a 50% profit including many mechanics who get about 50% of the shop rate...Second if your buying a new complicated car/truck heavy with electronics then a factory policy that you get a good price on may be just the ticket IF you plan on owning the vehicle beyond it's standard warranty. I'm buying a new 2018 truck with twin turbos that I plan on keeping beyond the standard warranty and a factory policy will pay for it's self the first time one of those turbos goes bad. I agree 100% on NEVER purchase a third party warranty! Thanks

Great Advice Scotty! I just bought a 2013 Prius 3 with all the Carfax reports and service history, 67K miles. That guy was giving me the hard sell that I needed to buy an additional warranty for up to 100K miles for just $1100 because this amazing "Certified" Toyota might break in half when I leave and if it does, it's on me. I laughed at him and said, "You Sir are an A hole. I don't want the extended warranty." It already comes with a 12 month/12,000 miles warranty from the dealer and 7 years/100K from the factory. The extended warranty doesn't cover routine maintenance items. It's a Toyota and I have faith the one I bought won't need any warranty work. Plenty of Prius cars out there with 200K + miles and still running fine.

Don't pay to fix something before it breaks

What if the extended warranty came not from the dealer, but directly from Ford Motor Company?

Really depends on the car. A Toyota? They never break. Don't waste the money. A Kia? A Chevy? They're worth the money on a used car IF you keep up with repairs at a good shop. At worst, you'll break even with the cost...but if you DO have a major repair, you're golden.
