I'm amazed by all the ignorance flying around here!!! "If they can't afford it?!?" Really, your voice just has little place amongst this discussion. That dismissive attitude should be met with a like response from the people who actually have the desire to affect positive change in the light of these extreme circumstances. Dismiss it! We all should be helping to face this, as a nation, as humans, and community members. People who are affecting positive change, caring, compassionate people who work incredibly hard to battle these issues. If you're not working towards a successful solution here, maybe step aside and focus your attention elsewhere, along with comments such as these that offer no interest in finding that solution. And with regards to the claim that this doesn't deserve sensitivity because of the skin color of those currently suffering, I just hope that this doesn't end up touching someone close to you. Because I think it's pretty disgusting to turn your back on a soul in turmoil because the body that soul encapsulates it is the wrong one for you to care about. This is about people, not one exclusive group, but humanity. I'm in no way saying that the support for our black and brown communities wasn't an abhorrent tragedy during the crack epidemic. But why would we repeat our past mistakes and leave so many people in dire need of support just because it has already been done to so many of us previously? That makes no sense! That narrative, "I refuse to help them because no one helped us" needs to be stricken from our vocabulary, from our responses to friends, family members and all others who have struggled under the weight of their addictions. That offers no help either. And if you're not helping, again, go elsewhere and not help there.

Sounds like we as a people are undermining the mental illness that is growing in society. The addictions are just a symptom of the issue that people are not happy. I wonder why so many people are unhappy with all the great ways we have set up for a lifestyle? Got to get up, get that buck and then some. I think that we would start finding reasons for the way things are going if we put these people in mental hospitals instead. You might find out that they are just trying to be happy. Or we can stick up our noses and say die, you don't suck it up like the rest of us do. And we all just slip right back into place and continue business as usual. You can tell that this current system is now starting to erode how we even feel about our fellow man.

what about the accountability for the people choosing to take that risk when they shoot up. reviving them over and over is only condoning it.. only the addict can choose when they want to get clean. why waste tax dollars and time when they will go right back to it the next day if not sooner.

“There has to be some accountability” Well why the hell do I have to be financially burdened by what some junky decides to shoot up? IMO a dosage of Narcan should come with 6 hours of mandatory community service. If you can find the money to get drugs you can find the money to pay for your shit. And having seen a lot of the people I grew up with turn to drugs I feel no sympathy for these people.

I live in a town over from Middletown and I was in the local Applebees when a women overdosed in a booth. They kicked her out with another person and called the police.
Brian Kaul (1 год назад)
Saving a life for $30 makes good sense, but if you incentivize overdosing by saving people repeatedly, then you get more overdoses. If you signal that you won't save people who overdose, that can have a deterrent effect on drug use within city limits. But nobody as far as we know has tabulated the effects, so the determination of which strategy will maximize overall utility largely comes down to the application of heuristics based on tempermental differences among the citizenry.
James Hipp (1 год назад)
Most of these comments are quite vile. I have a good friend who struggled with heroin addiction, and overdosed once. I'm not sure if he needed NARCAN or not. But he's been in NA for years now and manages at a Radio Shack and pays taxes and is an all-around stand-up guy. But without treatment, he wouldn't be alive. It's easy to say 'let them die' but it's a self-perpetuating cycle. Addicts don't really die off - they create the infrastructure of drug abuse. If they did we wouldn't have this problem in the first place.
John-Del (3 месяца назад)
No, if they all died off it would reduce the market for these drugs.
James Hipp (1 год назад)
You're correct. I think I was addressing the racist comments more specifically. Many of these posts are vicious and judgmental, thinking they can boil the issue down to one specific group being at fault. I'm not saying there is an easy solution of any kind, just that race-baiting and supremacist mongering isn't it.
Natasha Johnson (1 год назад)
They not saying to not help the person who overdose once but they are saying don't help the ones who keep overdosing. If they keep doing it over and over and its eating up the town budget they have no choice.

legalize cannabis in all of it's forms . legalize opium and coca leaf. It is the solution to the opioid crisis. Destroy the revenue stream of international organized crime . Addiction is a medical issue, not a criminal one. Very potent concentrates of Indica varieties of Cannabis have enormous potential to heal opioid and cocaine addicts and this has been known for a VERY long time. Doctors have been afraid and/or complicit in keeping the truth hidden from people. Big Pharma(the older brother of the illegal drug industry) keeps them silent. But that is changing now. Here in Canada we are going that route step by step. It is a beginning. My prayers are with my American neighbors of all communities who suffer because of the last 4 decades of genocidal and racist drug war mentality.
John-Del (3 месяца назад)
Better plan: Build a camp somewhere in the unpopulated plain states with 20 foot walls. Give free drugs, as much and any kind they want to anyone who wants to join. Give them food, water, and shelter. No getting out until you can pass a drug test for 6 months.

I had one who was revived earlier in the day break into my house and hold a gun to my face to rob me for money to get high again. I had to shoot him in the shoulder and then wait 4 hours for police because they were all tied up with overdoses, break ins, and armed robberies that ended in a child shot during a home robbery. My empathy is fading fast. The level of selfishness acting like the rest of us have to sacrifice to put ONLY drug overdoses as the ONLY priorities isn't fair either😕. There needs to be a balance for all and not just one group.

Chance (1 год назад)
Letting overdosers die will not solve the problem that roots itself in addiction and mental health. These instances are not purposefully mixed shots that induce overdose because the user thinks they will be revived. No matter how many times a person is saved from Naloxone, each time they have another chance at a meaningful and productive life. The issue is not with giving them a second chance, the issue is the lack of programs and follow-up that occur after an overdose is halted.

taryn w (1 год назад)
Don't get me wrong, I completely understand the nature of addiction. I understand what it does to a person's brain. But the only person who can decide to get clean is the addict, no one else can do it for them, that's why so many go to rehab and fail. Because they need to decide for themselves to get clean before they can do it. So yeah, in a way they have a choice. I understand the illness and sympathize with it, because I can be pretty self destructive myself, but I am never going to let someone take the power and personal responsibility away from these people who just do things to themselves and can at any given moment decide to get clean.

If heroin was legalized you wouldn't see all these fentanyl overdoses as people would have access to clean drugs of a standard strength - the govt. could tax these drugs, they would be cheaper so people could live normal lives (with no need for crime and the hectic lifestyle which is brought about by the high cost of class A drugs) and all money would go to the growers and government so violent drug gangs would be totally out of pocket. Narcan is an important tool but legalization is the only real solution IMO, the "war on drugs" has failed as people will always use. The fact American doctors are so quick to put people onto strong opiates does't help - it can happen to just about anyone and I suspect people wouldn't say "they can weed themselves out" if their son or daughter were addicted!

What about sick babies and people with cancer...? They should get first priority, not someone that caused their own problems...!!! Let drug dealers fund the narcane program if they're so worried about their customers. I'd rather have my tax dollars going to cancer research, than some selfish dude, that's destroying my community. Let drug dealers pay for narcane or force drug addicts to carry narcane so tax payers don't have to pay for it. If they are found overdosed without their narcane, give them the choice. 1. Jail for 30 days 2. Drug rehabilitation or 3. $2,500 fine..... that will nip your the problem overnight...!!!!

The comments are disgusting. People don't keep getting high because they know its a lifeline out there, most people would get high alone without anyone to save em' incase they stop breating. I don't think most people in the comments have any idea how opioids affects your brain after long term use and try to quit. The physical withdrawal is easy What's hard is the mental withdrawal that can last over a year after kicking it. You don't feel like doing nothing, no energy drowsy asf and most days no inspiration whatsoever. Opioid withdrawals are way worse than other drugs due to the mental part, you cant just go through the physical withdrawal and then be fine. People shouldnt talk shit when they dont know shit!
The Mad Librarian (1 год назад)
How much of the increase in the amount that Middletown is spending on Narcan is the result of price hikes by the manufacturer? It's an old drug. It should be cheap, maybe a dollar per dose, including the cost of the autoinjector..
Mickiddy Michael (1 год назад)
Until people start seeing addiction for what it really is, a disease, it will never be solved. I am an addict. I don't drink, do drugs, and am very carefully about prescription medicine. No one has ever called me an addict I just know I am. My dad is an addict, my aunts and uncles are addicts, my grandparents were addicts, and the list keeps going as far as I know. What's the one difference between my family and these people just dying off? My family has a lot of money. No one on my family has died of an overdose but all of them have overdosed several times. To think I'm someone special and the only one in the family not considered an addict is stupidity. I know what I am, I don't need to use drugs or drink to understand that. I'm alive and doing well because I acknowledged this disease before it took over me too.
