Korea and the U.S.: Towards a Peace Treaty? Michel Chossudovsky

The pathbreaking April 27 Panmunjeom Declaration for Peace, Prosperity and Unification of the Korean Peninsula signed by Chairman Kim Jong-un and President Moon Jae-in constitutes an expression of solidarity and commitment. It reaffirms that there is only one Korean Nation. It lays the groundwork for cooperation, reunification and demilitarization of the Korean peninsula. While the inter-Korean dialogue initiated prior to the winter Olympic games has set the stage for an era of cooperation and reconciliation between North and South, it does in in itself ensure the U.S. demilitarization of the Korean peninsula. U.S. Foreign Policy is based on the Art of Deception. It would be a grave mistake for North Korea to unilaterally give up its powers of nuclear deterrence without a corresponding commitment on the part of the US to tone down its military threats and reduce the size of its nuclear arsenal. The recent repeal of the Iran nuclear agreement by Donald Trump coupled with the imposition on Tehran of extensive economic sanctions should serve as an example to Korea. The US administration cannot be trusted. Senior officials in Trump's cabinet are intent upon destabilizing the inter-Korean dialogue.

How can you expect North Korea to not want to keep their defenses if America and South Korea still having military drills and operations officer Coast that are designed to invade North Korea do you think the president of North Korea is going to open himself up to negotiations while military drills are happening off the coast of his sovereign country how stupid can you get I don't think North Korea is going to do anything unless South Korea and the United States stop the military drills that was the condition that they had expected and wanted years in advance

There is absolutely no way the Washington regime will agree to significantly reduce its nuclear forces If that demand were made a condition of any agreement it would guarantee no agreement My estimation is the US will only accept a peace agreement if its military forces remain on the peninsula

David Walsh I agree. Washington will not give up its military occupation, remove warships, remove military bases, any war game exercises, nor the THAAD system. It will give up nothing in its end of the peace bargain, except removal of economic sanctions. That will not be enough for NK to even begin negotiations.
