The only difference between Nixon and Trump is Nixon didn't have the FOX News propaganda machine working for him.
These witch hunt asshats were the same people championing all the increased surveillance powers under The Patriot Act using the "what are you worried about if you have nothing to hide?" mantra. Their principles are all hollow bullshit to just do whatever they want. They want "small government", but to also outlaw gay marriage and cheer on police beatdowns of protestors. They love defending white supremacists with a century long history of murders and terror tactics, yet it's Black Lives Matter they label as terrorists.
The Republican party has been staffed by monsters for 30 years and it's only going to get worse. They're a death cult at this point and things aren't going to get better until they're voted out. And they're not going to get voted out until progressives pull their heads out of their asses and actually head to the ballot with something other than 3rd party protest votes. It didn't work in 2000 with Nader, and it didn't work in 2016 with Sanders/Stein. And it's not going to work with nonsense like the "Brand New Congress" movement that worries more about replacing existing Democrats who fail purity tests rather than eliminating the Republicans' majority.
Support whatever candidate you want in the primaries, but once the general election comes, for the love of god vote for the candidate with the best chance of beating Republicans. Focus on kicking Republicans out first, THEN worry about imperfect Democrats.
Even though I am sure John Oliver secretly supports Trump, I have to say this: if all the countries that were not our allies are pointing guns at us, since Trump has been president, atleast one country lowered its weapon. What say ye to that ?
Here’s the thing here... I’ve become so disillusioned by inactivity of the political sphere in general, that I’ve stopped watching network news altogether. Its divisiveness has lead to stagnation for over 30 years. The question I pose to LastWeek is what is the mission here? Is this simply entertainment? Is it truly to inform and empower? I’m just drained by the finger pointing. I assume it’s up to the generation after the millennial stop actually try to find a common goal between the outdated two political party system has, work to get that goal accomplished lush, find the next common goal, and find some kind of momentum out of what makes us different, and focus on the things that unite us. Just spitballin. Don’t mind me, I’m just tired of all the monkeys slinging feces at each other.
My greatest fear is making an outstanding entrance right before my eyes. People resisting to accept fact. It always used to happen, however it is the United States's turn to stand the test of time amongst itselves, not others. Political activists, commentators, supporters, etc. are all needed in the United States now more than ever. Not just in the United States, but from around the world as well. Just a message to the rest of the world, just because it is happening here in the States, not there, doesn't mean it cannot spread to your front door. There is someone gaining power much like a crazed German who loved to paint. Unfortunately, I doubt our strength in numbers to handle it ourselves, those who stay true to facts and a humane way of life are dying out, not by physical death, but do a zombifying disease called ignorance.
"Whataboutism" = historical comparisons. It is necessary in the name of progress. When conservatives say "What about...", they are simply trying to create awareness of a similar or exact situation that they feel went widely overlooked or under emphasized by democrats compared to the attention given to a current matter. Mark my words, if democrats win the next election they will use the term "What about..." 1000 times more than republicans do now.
I am a radical and by definition am extremely far left. I view both Democrats and Republicans with disgust because both parties are right wing, pro war, anti worker, anti constitution, and anti international law. I feel this should be super obvious to any sane, half way intelligent person who pays just a little bit of attention to politics and international relations. Sadly, most Americans really don't seem to grasp this basic reality thanks to non-stop indoctrination and and super sophisticated propaganda disguised as news and distributed through "news" outlets and tv shows...just like John Oliver's :-(
Having said all that, I despise Donald Trump and the Republicans and just about everything associated with the Right wing in the US. American "conservatism" is certainly the worst of two evils. I would REALLY like to believe that the reason we have Trump in the White House and lunatic conservatives in positions of power across the country is because the evil Russians interfered in our near perfect democratic system. That story gives me great comfort. If Russia, and not some peculiar internal problem, is to blame for the rise of Trump and the resurgence of the lunatic Right wing then I can most definitely sleep much better at night. I want that story to be true very, very badly
But, unfortunately, that shit just ain't true...
The truth is that Russia had little or even nothing at all to do with why Trump is in the white house. Trump is in the white house because there is no longer a viable Left wing alternative to corporatism and militarism in the United States. This has been true for several decades but it is just now being understood by the general population. Trump, for all his faults, understood this reality and exploited it to his advantage. He seemed to offer meaningful solutions to the problems common to working class people. Hillary Clinton offered nothing but bullshit. She offered few solutions to peoples problems and spoke in vague, empty language that has been literally killing people for countless generations. Hillary Clinton lost because she was a horrible candidate who totally misread the political landscape.
She also lost because the US has a bizarre "electoral college" system that allows for the loser of an election to still possibly win the election. Any system that allows for the loser to win a general election is by definition a bad system
The Russia investigation is bullshit and is a total conspiracy theory. It brings me great sadness to agree with Fox News on anything but this is painfully true to anyone who examines the available evidence. There is simply NO convincing evidence that Russia interfered in the Political system in any "meaningful" way. $100,000 worth of Facebook ads is not meaningful.
The economic, political, and social problems currently being experienced in the US are 100% American made. This is a sad, painful reality that we as Americans must accept if we are to have any hope of changing things for the better. Trump and the Republicans are in power because our country is a corrupt, rotten oligarchy that exalts greed as the highest human value and crushes or silences people who disagree. We destroy nations, we torture, and we don't keep our word. We are an empire in rapid decline
The sickness that is Trump can only be cured by creating a real democracy and disempowering the parasites who run the system. Russia, no matter what evidence Mueller turns up, is not the reason the US looks like a failed state; Americans are the reason :-(
It's not so much that we want it shut down. We're just sick of hearing about it 24/7/365, when there is a lot of other stuff that needs to be paid attention to. You're like the dog in "Up": Mueller is your squirrel, the very name distracts you from all of the more important stuff you should be doing. The more we hear about it, the less we like hearing about it. From the looks of it, Trump didn't know anything, anyway. The Russians tried to hurt both candidates. Manafort used his position on the campaign to get fraudulent loans, and even Strzok said Flynn wasn't lying, but he pled guilty because he couldn't afford the $100k in legal fees to fight it.
There were once were good news satire shows like "The Daily Show" and "Colbert Report". Now with shows like "Last Week Tonight", "The Daily Show w/ Trevor Noah" and "The Late Show", more people whose biases they appeal to consider them real news even though they are straight entertainment. Their success in misleading their audience in making them feel politically "On the right side of history" makes the public less able and wiling to discern true fact from fiction and discuss ideas among those with whom they disagree. Ultimately hurting our already polarized society.
Sources: do yourself a favor and read these (as well as the works cited) to understand where I am coming from.
John, I used to love your show but.. this can be ripped up real easy.. you spent all that time talking about fucking but didn't mention "we'll fuck Flynn then fuck Trump" text betwixt lovers. It's like you're talking to podesta or somethin... creepy. Why did he closed his group so fast?
I wonder how people feel if they paid any attention to the FBI getting absolutely torched this week and how there's something like 5 senior members/lead investigators having 100% admitting to intending to sway the election and promote Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump. Regardless of your view or feelings, that's the most anti-American, anti-democratic thing I can think of and it comes from the effing Federal Bureau of Investigation and from people that are pretty high up. If you didn't get a chance to listen to the deposition from either Monday or Tuesday, you probably should go check it out. It's not a question of whether or not key members of the FBI colluded to wage war on Trump's campaign, it's a question of how successful they were and whether Hillary's violation of the Espionage Act was dropped because the lead investigator had a vendetta against Trump and a major soft spot for Hillary.
I really hope that LWT doesn't whitewash what seems to be the biggest story of 2018 and perhaps the biggest thing since the 2016 election and that they put away their left-leaning filters and look at this honestly and admit that there is potentially damning evidence that very well could put multiple FBI members behind bars for a LONG time. It also really hinders what LWT spent nearly 18 minutes promoting to a degree because while FOX News certainly caters to the hard righters and goes off the rails on certain shows, they're the ones (along with select other hard right media outlets, as few as there are) that have been championing that the Mueller investigation into the Russia probe wasn't what the FBI said it was and that key members within the organization found a way to put Trump's campaign under a microscope and look for impeachment opportunities. Even James Comey is completely lambasted by the DOJ's report and I can't imagine anyone trying to thwart the freaking DOJ's factual, black and white reporting which basically threw several people under the bus this week and will have hell to pay for what they likely did/tried to do. Election tampering is a serious crime, as we've been made aware of via the Russia investigation, and if Americans tampered with it from positions of power that's a huge detriment to democracy and people on both sides of the isle need to be aware that this development could destroy the credibility of/actually destroy the FBI.
At no point did he make fun of disabled people. The Sock Slider commercial made no mention of being designed for disabled people. Sure, it may help disabled people, but so do elevators and I certainly hope you wouldn't find a joke about elevators offensive. He was mocking the caliber of advertising that Hannity is able to get and that's what should be taken away from it. Also...it's a silly infomercial; easy comedy fodder. And the second part of your complaint is ridiculous. After Lou Dobbs actually calls someone schizophrenic, John Oliver makes fun of his hair instead. It seems like you're just overreacting to the word "schizophrenic". You're missing the forest for the trees, buddy.
A buried comment I saw bears repeating-
I know this is a comedy show but it seems to be getting harder and harder to laugh knowing that this truly is our reality.
Hear, hear buried original comment maker.
My thing about John Oliver is that he makes certain statements, and has certain biases, that pretty much guarantee that his messages will not make it to Republicans (pretty much). He has good summarizing points, but all the in the middle stuff hurt his messages overall.
I think the most upsetting thing about this video is the focus group.
This guy totally said they found nothing, but they've been finding stuff since before the end of the election. HE LITERALLY KNOWS NOTHING ABOUT THE SUBJECT HE'S ADDRESSING!! It's like these people are immune to facts?!
So much strawmanning by Leftist Late Night Comedy. It would be better to address the concerns and criticisms of better and more worthy conservative critics of idealogical Anti-Trumpism; there are many. Jesus, @JohnOliver, what is the average age of a Fox News viewer, anyway? Why focus on them? Reach across the isle, engage with the intellectuals who are influencing conservatives. Don't be a pussy. There are liberals whose opinions I can listen to and consider, and indeed, make valid and productive criticisms of Trump and Republicans, who can concede ground rightfully lost to the Right. John Oliver et al. seem so witty, thorough in their research at first glance until you realize they are intellectually lazy and take advantage of liberal idealogues. It would be better if they dedicated anytime to admitting where they were wrong, or looking into or considering how they currently may be in terms of who they do and have backed politically. Wouldn't be too hard, and maybe the left and the right could come together for a productive conversation
I've lost all interest since realizing that it's true regardless what is discovered by any investigation, no matter how horrible or criminal, Trump's fellow Republicans will never do anything about much less impeach a Republican president. They don't care what he does as long as they are in power.
Seems pretty obvious that every news outlet that has the new "Fox" in it, is saying it's a witch hunt. Fox is big buddies with trump and i wouldn't be surprised if they have this standing creation called fake news. Trump creates the damn thing, Fox distributes it. John your message is heard. But i fear that everyone willing to listen or be persuaded to see the seriousness of this whole ordeal already believes that trump did something very bad. All other morons that say its a witch hunt will never believe it cause they don't wanna believe in the truth.. they simply wanna believe in the bullshit of actual fake news and lies being told by the white house. As a non american it feels horrible to say but currently the US is in its worst presidency in the history of it's existence. No position is being manned by someone that deserves being there due to intellect or sheer knowledge. Nothing in the US government is even remotely official or presidential. The US presidency and it's government has become the biggest laughing stock in the world. Who ever doesn't agree that is your right. But scratch behind you head and look at your own history, if this is something your proud of then i pity you.
I like the idea of democracy, even the very dilute version of the slave-owning ancient Greeks, or the somewhat less dilute version of present day Europe and the USA.
But in modern times, with news and information and entertainment media almost entirely under corporate capitalist control, I am dubious about whether it can last in competition with China, a huge conglomerate run by a mandarin elite who are not as stupid and ignorant as the masses there, _or here_ , and not as short-sighted as the "market" of whom Keynes said to a fellow economist "The market can stay irrational, for longer than you or I can stay solvent."
I just want to point out both sides are capable of these tactics just objectively look at this segment.
Redefine- yep that's here redefining the argument over a single word, collusion:
secret or illegal cooperation or conspiracy, especially in order to cheat or deceive others.
And 'finding links and Coordination between Russia and the trump campaign' looking for Collusion is another way of saying that.
Whataboutism- check on that too. it's a type of redirecting
And example being the 20 people 3 companies and 5 guilty pleads. on what grounds? Since as he said the Grounds for the investigation are so wide as to enclude 'any matters that arise or may arise directly from the investigation' or ahpw about bringing up a shows sponsors when that holds no reason to be in there other than to destract from what was last said.
Counter narrative- that's 90% of this segment calling the people arguing the other side conspiracy theorists, people who won't listen to reason and other hyperbolic names/things that are only ment to discredit or deamonise them with out actually having to argue the point.
There are other tactics thrown in here too, the biggest being
Apples to Oranges: comparing two items or groups of items are compared that cannot be practically compared.
Nice smokescreen Ollie, the texts from Page and Strzok you showed were not the ones that were at all important of course. You forgot in your exhaustive coverage of this scandal to mention the texts referenced here:
"“[Trump’s] not ever going to become president, right? Right?!” the lawyer, Lisa Page, wrote to Strzok, according to The Post.
“No. No he won’t. We’ll stop it,” Strzok responded, The Post says the IG report reveals. The text was sent in August 2016 only a few months before the presidential election, and after the FBI had started its investigation into Trump campaign aides, according to The Post."
FBI agents, using FBI workphones, to specifically talk about stopping Trump from becoming president during the campaign... and then you wonder why people think the Russian investigation is manufactured? I guess it's not quite so funny when it's put that way.
John Oliver: "Hillary sent someone to Trump Tower to offer her opponent dirt on herself" what a blatant manipulation!
there were no "dirt" given on this meeting. nothing. it means that the fact of meeting of Trump aides with Russian lobbyists without any result was highly desirable for crooked Hillary. it's called a provocation.
While I agree with most of Oliver's opinions, even for a comic he exaggerates the part of taking things out of context and supplying partial information. He always produces videos that I wish I could wholeheartedly recommend to friends, but in most videos he just goes over too many principles of being liberal and moral in the way he presents things that I simply can't. You can't BE fox news to criticize fox news, it dulls the point.
best strategy is to take a step back and look at the big picture, what does each side want, and what methods and oatterns are you seeing them using. Once you see the patterns you can free yourself from the brainwashing and become niether a democrat nor republican, but simply an American who loves there country
On the other hand, the well known traditional test of a witch was that he or she would float when dumped by the ducking stool. The innocent ones sank and drowned . They burned the others.
It's only my guess, but I reckon Trump is fat enough to float, his head especially. He'd probably make a far more spectacular blaze than Joan of Arc.
"I'm naming names here, I'm through with it. Trey Goudi is a complete schizophrenic, he is absolutely in service to the Establishment."... Lets soak that in. In Vietnam, the Establishment was the government that acted against an increasingly angry disenfranchised voting population. If we accuse him of acting in service to the government, THAT'S HIS JOB!. And as a Faux news presenter, it's Dobb's job to hand-job the nut-job. IT'S ALL ABOUT JOBS!
One of Trump's biggest supporters is the publisher of The National Enquirer. They KNOW fake news. Since Trump has become president (I won't dignify him with a Capitol-see that?) He, and his administration have created 2 new terms, i.e. "fabricated": invent or concoct (something), typically with deceitful intent. "Alternative Facts", and "Fake news". I didn't say that (cue a/v recording of him saying EXACTLY that. We expect politicians to lie, kiss babies and shake hands to get our vote. Trump is a germophobe (and latinophobe, homophobe, the list includes anyone who doesn't fawn over him), he claimed he kissed his wife on his birthday, I say pics or it didn't happen.
But the investigation is a waste of time. Even if they did find everything they are looking for, it wouldn’t matter. You can’t put Trump in jail & you can’t impeach him. Hillary avoided prison and Obama stayed in office. Let’s move on and focus on real issues.
@3:54, Fox finally firmly zeros in on their target audience, and talks to them like they're children. Next week it will be the same Sesame Street style collusion conclusion, but it will be the squinty-eyed guitarist from the Muppets' house band, and no one will be able to tell the difference. She actually bears a striking resemblance. Edit: Janice, that's her name.
Politics is a battle between which party can manipulate the thoughts of the American people more effectively. To me it’s a pretty intelligent psychological warfare that is obviously, and sadly, working on a large number of people, Republicans AND Democrats alike.
Right now, I personally think the
Republicans and the huge corporations funding their opinions are doing a better job at manipulating their support base. So many people are holding opinions that are SOOO obviously wrong and false, yet because the opinions are supported by the talking heads on “news” outlets too, these people view the opinions as right. It’s a righteous path of stubborn ignorance in the name of their political identity that they are taking. That is all.
Sadly those watching Fox News are susceptible to the brainwashing antics of e.g. Hannity and Janine. ........
and sadly they will not watch John Oliver. And even if they did they would not be capable of any critical thought because they have allowed themselves to be completely brainwashed. Mass hysteria through lie, hate- and fearmongering, the population thereby giving up all selfdetermination or critical thinking untill it is even put down and punished ...... See any present or former dictstorship. GOOD LUCK AMERICANS.......
They need to impeach trump and get this over with. Im sick of all trump liars on tv trying to trying to manipulate the people.
What about Hillary! Hillary wasn’t dumb enough to have a lawyer like cohen who recorded everything for some dumb reason....Cohen was so sloppy he got caught....So trump can blame hillary for him hiring incompetent people lol
To the dickhead who claimed I was defending Trump I wasn't! I did not vote for either candidate I just happen to think out of the two Hilary is more corrupt. I did say I'm getting tired of listening to comedians tired old Trump jokes they don't talk about anything else. Get off me all of you hateful Clinton supporters if she was so squeaky clean she wouldn't have been caught lying so much. "She didn't know C meant classified" did any of you watch the hearings? You're a pathetic bunch of bullies some moron told me I should just kill myself. Because I had a different viewpoint. Yeah you keep on virtue signaling you're just a bunch of thought thugs and the world will soon be rid of you.
Hey Johnny, you conveniently skipped explaining the part that triggered the investigation, you know, the shitty report from a former spy paid by Hillary and influenced by Mc Cabe's team (the 2 love birds) on a judge. Basically "witch hunt". If you want to do investigative comedy at least do it right or you're embarassing yourself.
I know the sock slider thing looked rediculous, but if you imagine that it's being marketed toward people with dissabilities who physically can't bend over easily, it sems like a pretty good little tool.
No evidence, Strock and Page, give me a f**king break, get your facts. Goudy is one of the only honest guys we have. A years investigation by Muller has come up with nothing. So sick of any defense of Hillary.
