All my teachers had to use to teach us in high school back in the day was a book and an overhead projector. I took all AP classes through high school and learned just fine. Made a 32 on my ACT. We didn't have computers or ipads. Only thing holding schools back are the students who don't care about learning. Kids these days can go home and become pretty much experts on any topic with the internet. It just takes effort; something many kids lack these days.
I'm from Charlotte and went to school there and I'm very grateful there was diversity in my schools. I think it's important to interact with people from different backgrounds before you become an adult because that's just how the real world is going to be.
That parent concerned that she would have to worry about her kid now taking drugs because there'd be black kids attending... That's a bullshit concern. I went to majority white, primarily rich family school, and I can tell you that the number of kids taking and dealing drugs there was still pretty high...
I watch Election night Media reactions twice a month to watch you all, go from chilling champagne at 5pm then, your Socialist tears & sobbing shock at 11pm.. as Obama voters in OH, MI, WI & Penn elected Trump cuz you all bitch slapped those Dems all year ...YOUR arrogance elected a MAN to replace a stuttering CHILD..whos 8 yrs fades away daily..THANK YOU smug fools!
2:00; I'm sorry immigrants, but if our school systems are so bad that you're giving protests in the streets, go back to your home countries and get your education. Or start investing in your communities instead of moving to the upper class neighborhoods. The working class cannot afford to pay your ever growing fees (welfare, food stamps, school equilibrium funds, etc.) that the your unemployment has cuased in the last few decades.
A. Do you know why Immigrants came to America? Take Syria, for example. Their country is war torn, so they have to run away.
B. They aren't moving to upper-class areas. They just want an ordinary education.
I have never understood how racism is a thing. The first time I was ever mad aware of it was when I was a kid, watching a Disney show that’s so raven. By the USA’s standard, my mom would be characterized as black, and me as white. The fact that in the US some schools my mom would have attended would receive any less funding than the ones I would have attended is mind boggling to me. We’re just different shades of human. Why do you place worth on color? If you were to go to a clothing store, and there is these T-shirts same design, would it be logical if the one with the blue background cost 20$ and the one with the red background 50$? It’s just ridiculous
To anyone who says the 1970's efforts to raise standards through forced desegregation and bussing did not work or was wrong, I call b.s. Prove it with real long-term peer-reviewed studies. All real peer reviewed research on desegregation efforts, including bussing to schools outside one's neighborhood, show that A) it worked as John noted, and B) when discontinued, schools in poor minority neighborhoods returned to problems of poverty and poor outcomes. As just one (of many) examples, here is a great one: https://www.thisamericanlife.org/562/the-problem-we-all-live-with-part-one
The child thinks the black one is evil. This is because we relate darkness and evil and scary things to blackness. We are geared to fear certain things and we react to what our families teach us. We can tell kids that black is white and white is black and they would not know until outside elements interfered. That child looked burnt which can be seen as bad. We naturally dont want to get burned. The child does not understand the idea of race yet unless mom is ranting about it at home.
Why try so hard to just make up excuses; implausible fantasy explanations. I wouldn't even call what you are writing an "opinion." You are trying to be a psychologist (which you are not) in an attempt to discard what is noted in the video about the problems with institutional racism. Did the video show the child was afraid of a "burned" child? No. And don't insinuate that the fright of "burned" skin was edited out. You simply wish for another explanation, but yours is not at all plausible.
I appreciate John Oliver’s humour and he often raises some very important topics, but it’s just stupid to be bussing kids around just so they have have an ethnically diverse education. If your neighbourhood is white then your school will probably be predominantly white - where is the issue with that? Likewise reserving places for specific ethnicities, defining people by their ethnicity, that IS racist! If you don’t want people to be discriminated against encourage a colourblind society, not one that patronisingly declares that ethnic monitories need special dispensation to compete with whites!
Brent Kabat Lot of things to unpack here and perhaps I was a little casual in my original remarks so bear with me...
I’m not disputing that it was effective - I don’t have contrary data on that and I’m happy to accept that it probably did work in correcting statistical imbalances in metrics like criminal offending, scholastic achievement as so on. In addition, it seems obvious to me that it would work - so no quarrel there. My objection is a principle against the forceful method employed at the detriment to white communities who had done nothing to deserve the inconvenience. I don’t believe that white children or their parents are responsible for fixing the problems of another ethnic group. Again, creating any kind of system that codifies special provision for any ethnic group is racist and unfair. Any sort of affirmative action is inherently discriminatory, usually against white men.
Segregation between races does indeed connect to problems in the U.K. too, but its roots are different. The US was originally segregated because of the colour of a man’s skin, in the U.K. it’s largely self imposed by many of our ethnic minorities who wanted to preserve their separate culture under the U.K.’s dubious policy of multiculturalism. They mostly chose to live amongst themselves. This is inevitably going to lead to higher crime rates and more poverty amongst communities with cultures that don’t conform to the traditionally British system. Some are FAR better at integrating than others. Now whilst I would choose to limit culturally incompatible migration, for those who are legally already here we cannot not really force them to integrate and certainly shouldn’t be obliging the native population to make overtures.
Clearly the issues in both countries are different, not least in origin, but where I think there is commonality is that the problem with minority communities lies in their culture.
For example, in the U.K. we have a lot of low skilled migration from Eastern Europe under EU freedom of movement rules. Those Poles, Latvians, Lithuanians etc. do not have nearly the same criminal propensity as the black population does and tend to be more employable than even the native British population. Neither these EU immigrants nor the black minority are exempt from occasional discrimination, nor are they wealthy, and yet there is a huge difference between them. There is some evidence for a disparity in IQ between the races but that gap seems to narrow every decade and it’s obviously controversial and disputed so I don’t think simply saying it’s because they’re less intelligent sufficiently answers the question. I believe the more significant problem rests with a culture of perpetual victimhood, glorification go criminal behaviour, and a lack of aspiration within some associated ethnicities.
Obviously there are going to be a lot of people who say that systemic racism is still holding back non-whites. However I think that’s rather specious in light of the fact that East Asians tend to be more successful than whites and that most of the ‘indicators’ of institutional racism are easily explainable. Police targeting of blacks for for example can be attributed to their massive overrepresentation in criminal activity and under-representation in positions of authority is the result of lower average levels education (certainly when you look at the age group currently in charge of our institutions). There are also laws against discrimination in employment and other areas.
Hopefully this makes my position a fair bit clearer.
You are insinuating that we should ignore the problems that come out of our defacto segregation here in the U.S. Maybe in Britain you don't deal with this problem. If so, then do not criticize us for making various attempts at correcting our shortcomings. Facts are, forced bussing corrected the school shortcomings and outcomes EVERY single time it was done. No study refutes that. Not liking one's kids bussed is another issue, but it did indeed correct educational deficiencies.
One thing that I think is kind of passed over here-- I go to school in Virginia, and the people I go to school with are incredibly diverse. I have classmates from all different parts of the world and from all different income levels. But even though our school don't look segregated externally, internally there are very strict stratifications. If you walk into an AP, or even an honors class, most of the faces staring back at you will be white. In an academic class, most of the students are people of color. Even if the overall makeup of our school is wide and varied, the classes look incredibly homogenous.
The easiest way to solve this would be making schools with a majority of students being black the best in the state. Give them the funding they need to hire more teachers, get supplies, repair buildings etc. - so good in fact, white kids will have to apply to get in.
You don't want to see the real problem, that's not race but money.
Back and Latino grew up in poor place with bad school, and can't access good university with bad curriculum.
When you're rich, you can be black, white or even sexually identify as a table, nobody cares, you will have the best teachers, best education and best career.
Just share more money to poor schools, and racial conflict will disappear.
The funniest is, big IT companies, fight against segregation, but don't dare to pay taxes.
I am from Austria, and I wonder: why ist it bad to dress up as a black person? I really don’t know, Kids dress up as a black King from „morning Land“ every year in my hometown (and all over Austria I guess), and go from house to house bagging for a sozial Projekt, and nobody cares.... I really don’t see the problem.
It's a bit... touchy. People in America and Britain would dress up as Black people and mock them, making them look like stupid people. They were insulting them. Most of the time, white people dressing up as black people are ignorant or trying to be mean. Ignorance is forgivable, but it's still kind of insensitive.
I go to a school with like less than 10% white people, In a lot of my classes I will be the only white dude in the room. It’s not really that big of a deal once people get to know you they usually won’t treat you any differently.
When I was a kid I LOVED Barbie and I wanted to be white since at that time I hadn't seen any black Barbies. My mum bought me one (which I still have), but once I started school, it didn't help. At my kinder, there was hardly any black kids (i can't remember one, but it was a quite a few years ago) and then at my primary school, there were hardly any black kids. I can probably only name around 4 or 5 of the top of my head that are in my year level. I finally learnt before prep that skin colour doesn't matter.
Another bonus thing is that a year or two ago, I was asked by someone in my class why all my best friends are white.
So most ignorant “white” families want the best for their kids because money is better than knowledge and probably go to a “safe” environment. But sink into this though, How many shootings happened so far and who did them? That’s number one
Number two - Most white families pays the board to have their kids advance to the next grade even with their poor grades. Plus on the news, the results doesn’t go out where most whites are not put in the negative output so it is on the "hush-hush".
Number three - Guess what? I worked as an I.T. engineer and have to support numerous of white people. I don’t mind at all by there are a lot of times where common sense doesn’t adjust to them well and then I come in to fix it for them as a Tech and even a supporter of their job role on the “paid to get by” education they supposedly earned. Also the majority of whites at my job are so greedy (for example - wanting a standing desk, multiple monitors, multiple computers, and upgrade cellphones) and still can't get the job done meanwhile other ethnicity can manage better BUT whites get the credit.
Fuck white schools. They can keep their opioid overdose rates, mass shootings and high suicide rates.
All blacks ever wanted was equality, but whites refuse to provide it because they're controlled by fear. So they starve us of funding and resources in our schools then call us animals when we resort to criminal behavior as if there is no correlation between poor education and crime(for all races). And as if they're not responsible for creating that narrative. (School to prison pipeline)
We're smart enough, educated enough to teach our own...the TRUTH about this country. NOT some white washed bs that many white kids won't learn until college and will feel betrayed by their school systems...left wondering why they weren't taught this or that...(propagandized)
That's all I see on YouTube... whites denying their barbaric history and the institutionalized racism that still prevails in American society.
A good 3rd of the white American education system is an absolute useless money pit anyway.
Ranked damn near 40th in the world...disgusting.
seems to me that... the problem isn't segregation... but... funding. Everytime these unfortunate schools are mentioned, their issue relates to one biiig problem, funding. Is it racial bias or just a poor system design? I can't say without deeper investigation, but it certainly it's worth looking into instead of claiming racism to be the problem and forced assimilation as the answer. A lot of intermixed southern schools are poorly underfunded and suffer the same issues despite their rather mixed and diverse student base. Schools' fundings are inheretantly related to their community and often the property value or something akin to this magical number which determines school funding. This system, is clearly disfunctional and classist. While the argument 'more taxpayer dollars, more school rights' may seem legitimate on the surface, it's the kids (who don't pay taxes) who are going to school, not the parents. They should all be on the same leveled playing ground.
I think none of this would've happened if they returned the slaves back to Africa after setting them free. Wait, not only I did that. The guys who won the Civil War and freed them thought so too! So we have this problem because your greatgrandaddy couldn't fork enough cash for a few boats back home for Jamal.
I went to 2 schools in upstate ny, and have been going to a school in louisiana for a few years now. In new york there was one black family in the whole town. I was awkward when talking to and about black folks because I was never exposed. I just didn't know how to act, I didn't want to be rude in any way. But when I moved to louisiana, that awkwardness wore off. I didn't need to learn to coexist because we were different, I needed to learn that we were so incredibly similar we naturally coexist.
This doesn't really make sense as Im re-reading it, but I hope my point gets across. All that seperates white people from a black folks is a few phenotypes and centuries of us being dicks to them for no justifiable reason. Thats my highschool kid perspective
What exactly is the problem? It seems that New York schools (which I am a student in, albeit not in the city) are not inherently racist, but just don't have a diverse class. That's no one's fault. My school is completely white-washed, with only a hand full of black and Latino students. If black and Latino people want to send their kids to better schools, then they can manufacture a better life for themselves, I don't know what else to say to them. I know I should be supporting universal education because I'm a Socialist, but the truth is, is that this is the United States, not Sweden.
There is something I do not fully understand, since I am not an American maybe, if someone can help me understand. If I am correct, the American civil war was about slavery, so Americans fought to free the slaves while the confederates fought to preserve slavery, all well and good up to this point. After all this blood and gore and terror of war, why would even up to date, still exist racism against a race that people fought to free from the chains of slavery? It is controversial at best to go to such lengths to free people from slavery only to treat them as second rate citizens after.
way to go john. white=/= another white, the same way as a african american doesnt equal a jaimacin. you also are bringing things our grandfathers did -not us. just once john, imagine that i lived the same way. looked down on, treated like shit, and went to a school where the teacher fell through the floor once. not all whites are the same, we all dont like fish, and yet you lump us in one group? really? a honest covo should be based more on local disparities first. why did my school, a alternative high school, still get less funding than the "bad" school of our county? it must be all the white kids right? you are a judgemental dick who believes somehow all whites are homogenized and live a better life than anyone else.
Well the situation about high schools in New York is that there are certain criterias that children have to meet to get into the school. Or they have to take a test (SHSAT) to get into those schools. Which the city of New York provides prep for. The point is it's different from zoned schools like County schools. It's their own fault (minorities) if they don't study hard enough.
I could have told you that the schools in the south was not like that anymore. We all identify as southerners and share the exact same culture. And if you look at the pkaces where this is going on you'll notice that these areas are all controlled by democrats. Just another example of why the Democrats are the party of the Klan.
this is ridiculous. it's black people who want to live faraway from th "rassist whiteys" and like to form their own ghettos, and of course, the quality of a school depends on the quality of the community sustaining its cost.
and when you're working under the table and/or living off welfare, there aren't much taxes to be collected and invested in education.
why should kids be taken away from their community to be transported to faraway school so that failing communities might abuse others' hard work, at the expense of their children's wellbeing?
if blacks want to go to white schools, just move to white neighbourhoods instead of locking ourselves inside of the ghetto. or start paying some taxes and creating some wealth instead of leeching it off other people
I started my school days in NY, and there was 1 black kid, I moved to Florida at 8 years old and my school here was a cultural melting pot...everyone insults southern culture as more racist but that's not my experience
There's always people arguing about whether or not "reverse racism" is a thing. So if you have anyone arguing AGAINST diversifying schools, use that against them as a reason. As Trevor Noah says, "Prejudice doesn't hold up to contact."
Shout out to Charlotte man. I live there and mostly on this if NC is talked about it’s in a bad light (tbh we deserve it sometimes) but this time we are the good ones. My school is 49% and 51%. For the sake of making a point of how close that is I’m not even telling you which percent is which.
We tried doing this with my school, but it didn’t work not because of racism, but because it legitimately wouldn’t work out for us. The bussing was a nightmare, the schools became just more segregated because the black kids stuck together for the most part and so did the other races. White people sometimes became friendly, but when you have white suburban kids and black kids from the impoverished part of town pulled from their friend groups and vice versa has has just made it worse for all of us.
0:25 could that just be due to location? I'm in Northern Scotland and my school is seriously 95% white and that's probably being generous tbh. But that's not due to racism or segregation, it's just that our population is mostly white. Although we have taken on around a dozen Syrian families so it may diversify more in the future
i love john but this presents everything like all white schools in the usa are these nice ass places with funding but that’s just not true. come to the south and go to a county school that’s mostly white. it’s not remotely nice.
yes. contacts help humanize other races. i'm chinese chinese, growing up with all chinese people around, learning whitewashed history, receiving old hite men's ideas of the world. i've never interacted with any black people before i visited usa for the first time when i was 20, and my parents's advice for my trip was "watch out for black strangers (because they will mug you)". when i pointed out they were being racist, they say i should quit the pc bs and see the truth, that auntie li was robbed by black gangs in paris. many of the older generation have never seen any normal people of another race, they only know black people as lazy poor african villagers who sing and dance all day, or muggers and drug dealers that keep ruining white people's noble civilization. and american dog whistle and racist ideas and whitewashing of history fly very easily in china because of that (a lot of asian immigrants are very politically conservative). and this is kind of not a real problem for they as ordinary chinese laborers will never actually make any difference to a black person's life (although as china started trading a lot with africa, the nationalism and racism is loud enough to make me -and the world- very uncomfortable), and our generation sees more black people in pop culture so they are humanized (a little bit). but white americans can make big decisions and make huge differences in black ppl's lives. so contact amd humanization is important if you want to step out of the legacy of systemic racism, and then go on to inform other cultures with ideas of equality- not just between rich white christine men.
Community pharmacists are the health professionals most accessible to the public. They supply medicines in accordance with a prescription or, when legally permitted, sell them without a prescription. In addition to ensuring an accurate supply of appropriate products, their professional activities also cover counselling of patients at the time of dispensing of prescription and non-prescription drugs, drug information to health professionals, patients and the general public, and participation in health-promotion programmes. They maintain links with other health professionals in primary health care.
