So I’ll be honest with you, I’ve gotten a lot of questions about Mustard Oil and if it’s okay to eat it. And the truth is, I really didn’t know much about this oil. Other than mustard I put on my Hot Dogs growing up, I had no clue what Mustard Oil was, if it’s dangerous or healthy, toxic or tasty.
The good news is that I’m going to give you a quick summary about it in today’s video and share with you what I’ve learned.
What Is It?
Mustard oil is made from pressing the seeds of a mustard plant to produce a spicy oil.
One reason I hadn’t heard much about it is because mustard oil is popular in Eastern cooking, although some American chefs have begun experimenting with the oil, which has a heat and distinctive flavor to it.
Banned By FDA
Real mustard oil, however, is actually banned for cooking uses by the FDA. This is because it contains an ingredient called erucic acid that has been shown to cause heart problems. Erucic acid is a fatty acid that it is not well metabolized. It’s considered a contaminant.
Essential Oil Only
However, the FDA does allow a different type of oil, called mustard essential oil, to be sold for cooking. Mustard essential oil is made from steam distillation of mustard seeds. It’s considered safe for use in cooking by the FDA.
Both mustard oil and mustard essential oil is used for massage, but only the “essential” version can be used for cooking.
However, there are some benefits to mustard essential oil.
Boosts Cardiac/Heart Health
Because it’s rich in both mono and polyunsaturated fats, it helps lower “bad” cholesterol and raise the “good”.
Contains Antibacterial and Antifungal Properties
Improves Hair Health
This is because it’s high in omega 3 fatty acids, which has anti inflammatory benefits
Reduces Pain Associated with Inflammation
Treats Gum Disease
Good For Skin
This is if you use it topically
I can tell you more, but let me just give you the bottom line for Mustard Oil.
Regular, unregulated mustard oil can be dangerous, so don’t bother using it. The “essential” oil version is much safer and you can even cook with it. However, I wouldn’t bother.
You can use it on your skin, it’s better and less risky than eating it. However, even with that I suggest using other oils - Emu, Almond, Coconut, etc.
So there you have it - an interesting oil, but there are much better, healthier and safer oils for you to use topically and in your foods.

Dr Sam Harris for once your research is not entirely true and after seeing the video I can say you rely more on data from FDA then doing your own research and we all have come to know what FDA has been doing with Food industry in general. Example 90% of Almonds in USA are Genetically modified and hence most oils are not true almond oil so how can it be healthier

Hey doctor Sam,
Could you please make a video about sleep timing and hormone release, and Not sleep length. We all know we need proper hours of sleep but could you make a video about specific times to get to sleep for proper health and recovery? Also asking for bodybuilding purposes, testosterone...etc
Dr Sam Robins, is there any cure for OCD? I really want to be cured of this, but I just can't find anything concretely successful. I am now looking into diet to help improve my condition, but it's still not a cure. This problem has since plagued my life and I feel like there may not be a cure for me. I have done so called "counseling" and it doesn't work. And I don't want to take a bunch of un-natural medicines from the pharmecutical companies.
Cold-pressed mustard oil is very healthy - just ask the nearly 2 billion South Asians with much lower rates of the most common co-morbid diseases than in the West. Why would someone waste time on making such a video? Is it that more western doctors are trying to warn people about the dangers of traditional time tested Asian foods? Is it that they want to destroy the health of other societies now that they've destroyed their own? It's probably not that sinister, but if you've seen this channel's video on the dangers associated with eating peanuts, the one claiming that soybeans are eaten in small quantities in Asia as a whole bean (LOL!) and a couple other (well, loads of) videos about improving erections, weight loss and increasing muscle size ...and if you haven't figured out for yourself by now, dude is obviously getting paid by someone or reading the wrong "journals".
Mustard oil is Much More Healthier & Safer in comparison to Other Oils. In Nepal, Mustard oil Has been used from many centuries. And one thing that our Grand parents never die from Heart diseases. It is safer than other oils.
I used to watch this channel, however this video shows that how shallow and research less are his content. Being a researcher myself, what i say is despite having some element of truth his videos are more of a marketing content than a healthy suggestion.
Mustard oil is one of the oldest cooking oil ever used by humans, cold pressed in wodden press. Untill medival age people had no idea to extract (non essential) oil from different vegetables, flowers and seeds. This oil is used as ONLY cooking oil used by about a billon of people in south east asia. Average life expectancy is 62.5 years. Industrialization has caused marketing calling profitable oils 'healthy' and people are washed away with it. Shame.
Dr sam please make a video for hoe to cure lipoma. And another for how to posssiblr to grow beard when at the afe of 22 still not grow. Please its my request to you sir.
Please also provide remedy for lipoma and beard growth.
Mainly for lipoma
Mustard oil can be a healthier option compared to some other vegetables oils especially soybean oil that replaced mustard oil a few decades ago from cooking in some eastern countries where mustard oil was highly used for cooking. Interestingly, though mustard oil was not even essential leveled, it did rarely create problems to health. My grandfathers and mothers didn’t die from heart diseases, they were very healthy in-fact despite of using it for cooking exclusively. As far as I know heart diseases were not as common as it’s now when people replace it by soybean oil. FDA don’t talk much about notorious GMO soybean oil as they do to mustard oil. For many years, they didn’t consider sugary processed junk food as unhealthy. FDA made themselves unreliable to follow.Still, many people are exclusively having mustard oil, even though not essential, as far as I know they claim they feel much healthier now compared to before when they used to cook with soybean oil ,(replaced it by mustard oil after knowing soybean oil isn’t heart healthy).
Mustard oil is being used in India for centuries in cooking and as well as for cosmetic uses.
Its a very safe oil if it is extracted from cold pressed stone extractor.
In India especially it is used in non vegetarian dishes.
Mustard oil, coconut oil, almond oil, ground nut oil, Ghee, Butter were always used in cooking in India from ancient time.
But to bad influence of US and western Capitalist mindset, refined oils, olive oils, sunflower oils etc have been now penetrated in Indian markets. Most harmful oils. These cause lot of health complications and a hole in ur budget. Stay safe and away from these and go for natural oils.
" what Western people stamped will become scientific." Amen, my friend. White society just goes around thinking they are the only ones who have science or their version of science is the only one that is valid. As if people of colour never had their own science or are too uncivilised to have science. That is white supremacy in full swing. PoC have been managing their own lives and experiences in their own lands way before the English set out to "civilise" the world. Keep speaking the truth and never be silent. Thank you.
ViVo_ KOTH what Western people stamped will become scientific. cold pressed virgin and non GM mustard oil is very good for health. Indian used it for centuries. no health issues. the devil is in Western capitalism , they want to promote very expensive olive oil . it is not suitable for Indians. stick to your rituals . don't believe in these greed Western so called scientist.and never use Genetically modified mustard seeds oil.
puts in our food sauces etc... i could never understand why would they even consider using such ingredients that pose a threat and that are toxic and poisonous ingredients to cause harm or even death to humans. That's just insane!
