After nearly 400 years of being ruled by the Spanish Empire, the Philippines found themselves under the rule of a new colonial power in 1899 - the United States. That casualty rating is ridiculously broad, and anyway there were never enough US soldiers IN the Philippines to cause 220,000 casualties in the first place. No mention that the revolutionaries also fought each other, and no mention of the great majority of the populace NOT fighting the US: if they had the US could not have stayed. When John J. Pershing was assigned to pacify Mindanao he did so almost entirely peacefully, entering the Moro villages unarmed to TALK to them. But that sort of thing would not fit what the author is preaching.

The Americans destroyed our asian-hispanic culture and branded us like apes by spreading propaganda that Filipinos were uneducated and not fit for self-governance to gain public support. They never told the American people that we had the first university in asia, earlier than harvard, one of the first suspension bridge years ahead of the golden gate, filipinos back then enjoys free public education as implemented by the government contrary to the claim of Americans. They branded Filipinos as savages when in fact they're the one who acted as such. Spain was struggling to control the islands due to more than 200 clusters of revolution throughout the islands and decided to sell te Philippines to the US to prevent the humiliation.

we finally have our independence, but look at what happened, Inalipin naman tayo ng kapwa natin Filipino, mas ok pa nung annexed tayo ng Amerika, look us at now, independent pero some of our kababayan are working abroad, some nagugutom, walang tahanan, nag tyatyaga sa kakarampot na sahod.

Spain introduced Christianity in the Philippines and they had built churches and there were domestic Priests like GomBurZa who were executed by Spaniards. That is history I do not hate any of these countries though

Mckinley didn't even want the Spanish american war to happen in the first place, but once he got into it he saw it as America's (possibly misguided) responsibility to develop the filipino nation toward a modern country, as the Philippines back then was very very much backwards, since that's how the Spanish liked to keep it. The Americans beat down the self-appointed president/dictator because they wanted to control the situation since they knew if they had left, Japan or a European power like Germany would leap at the chance to subjugate the Philippines. The US built a school system from scratch meant to teach the populace how to be a good citizen, they fought and ended slavery which existed in parts of the islands and they also beat down on piracy. They could have done a better job of it, and the Americans were arrogant at times but the earliest date in which Philippine independence was feasible (Due to external threats like Japan) was after ww2. The worst thing I believe the Americans did was at the very end however, when Filipino veterans were DENIED their rightful pensions as soldiers in ww2 who fought for the Americans and themselves. In the end however, the Philippines and the US enjoy a good relationship today, Filipinos have a very favorable view of the united states and both countries cooperate very well.

Please show a citation for the claim that the Philippines wasn't annexed. You don't think that Filipinos were sophisticated enough to govern themselves?
Coolbread Rye (15 дней назад)
It wasn't annexed though, Hawaii was annexed but Philippines was set on a course for american-model independence that was envisioned to be in place within 50 to 100 years according to Taft and some other republicans at the time. Manila was cosmopolitan but it had no means or legitimacy in controlling other islands in the archipelago, they estimated that it'd fall into a state of anarchy because of it. I don't see a scenario in which the Philippines would escape foreign subjugation or anarchy.
Rhythmicons (15 дней назад)
That's an Amerocentric way of looking at it. Manila was rather cosmopolitan in 1900. The US saying "if we didn't go there then X country would" is not a justification for annexation. Arguing also that the US school system was built from scratch ignores the intellectual elite of Manila (Rizal, et al.). How to teach them to be good citizens? Slavery was already on the decline. Independence is regardless of external threats and if anything it would have probably been the British who took it over but that's counterfactual.

A philipino general told his government that they cannot defeat usa by force of arms. His plan was to fight a guerilla war and make the war too costly for the usa. In essence he wants to use the anti-war sentiments of a lot of americans. He was then assassinated. 60 years later north vietnam adopted a similar strategy. It worked.

Hi I am a Filipino, this conflict saw the outgunned and outmanned Filipinos fight against a better-armed and better-trained American force. And as what usually happens in wars, atrocities are bound to happen. For the Americans—frustrated by the Filipinos’ guerrilla tactics—it involved burning down villages, herding the locals into concentration camps, and inflicting torture such as the infamous “water cure” on captured combatants. Massacres also occurred, as what happened during the infamous Balangiga and Moro Crater Massacre. The first one happened after General Jacob Smith ordered his men to turn Samar into a “howling wilderness” and kill all the male children ten years and over as retaliation for Filipino guerrillas wiping out the American garrison in Balangiga. The second involved American and Philippine Constabulary forces massacring more than 600 Moros (mostly women and children) in their village located inside the volcano of Bud Dajo, Jolo. It is estimated that 20,000 – 35,000 Filipino combatants died in the conflict, with the civilian population suffering anywhere from 200,000 – 1,000,000 deaths (a cholera outbreak also led to high casualty rates). The Americans, on the other hand, suffered approximately 4,000 deaths.

Philippine American War is not yet over look at the comment section
Hello, Thought Monkey, this is a nice and generalized video about this War. I'm a history teacher from the Philippines and I just wanted to point out that it would seem that people might get the impression from your video that the First Philippine Republic (Malolos Republic) literally and figuratively fired the first shot of the Filipino-American War. However, Filipino historians agree and have substantial proof that it was William W. Grayson, an American private, who fired the first shot of the War in February 4, 1899 in Santa Mesa, Manila (see Arnaldo Dumindin). Grayson was quoted yelling "Halt!" to a Filipino soldier. The soldier, of course, did not understand English and he did not stop walking. Grayson said that he thought that the best thing to do was to shoot the Filipino. "He dropped", Grayson said. "If I didn't kill him, I guess he died of fright". While it is understandable that the objective is to simplify the complicated and rich historical details to provide a simple overview, it is important to note that generalizing an account can lead to a blurring of details, and thus, a false or at least inaccurate account of what really happened. Nevertheless, this was a nice video although, as I said, your viewers might get the impression that it was the Filipinos or the First Philippine Republic that started the war.

I think the Philippines would’ve been a great country today if the Americans stayed away from the Filipino-Spanish war. It would’ve been a sweet independence that the Filipino Revolutionaries worked hard for. Now we don’t have our own identity because we still allow our American thinking to our judgements. These white colonizers always think that they’re doing us brown people a huge favor by enforcing their culture on us.

If the Filipino Revolutionary Army fought an attritional war, we might have forced them to give up. But then again, European colonial ambitions were just at the corner, waiting for a chance. I'd be damned if we became a German colony and maybe would have opened a Pacific Theater in World War One.

I am sad to see that my fellow country men nowadays.....are just too lax about everything. Ignorant, lazy (Oopsies i fall under this one) and naive, they just....don't care, well, most of them. Jose Rizal, my country's hero, said that we (the current generation of Filipinos) will be the one to save our country, but i don't really see that happening soon. Teens my age...they lack the enthusiasm, the thirst for knowledge, they just lack some basic human traits. In my experience.....I have to admit i want to give up on them....but i can't.....because I'm one of them, lmao of course I'm not one of those that will change my country I'm an elitist and i will always look down on people that will just put shame on my country, their own fucking existence smears mud on my beloved country for christs sake might as well just go mass shooting these idiots and pass down a message to everyone in my country that we need to fucking change. The idea of colonizing the Philippines TO CIVILIze the Filipinos by the Americans is a big lie. The trouble with American society to this day is RACIAL DISCRIMINATION. or Racial Bias. Why does America want the Philippines... only to be discrinminated in America? Filipinos are discriminated during the 1930s as the author Carlos Bulosan story.... America is in the Heart
Rhythmicons (16 дней назад)
Well, consider that the presumption that a culture is not civilized is a product of racism. Historians argue racist, religious, and even machismo led to the Spanish and Philippine-American War.

The Philippines prospered under USA. During that era Philippines was the most visited country in asia and also known as the “Paris of Asia. They educated the Filipino people and fix the country economically. They even promoted PH in televisions.
Rhythmicons (16 дней назад)
The Philippines was a money pit for the Spanish the entire time. They only kept it because they didn't want to lose their Catholic foothold in Asia. Sure, some individual Spaniards and Chinese merchants became very wealthy, but this was localized. Hispanization wasn't really a success, Spaniards who were sent there didn't want to stay, and the Dutch War and British invasions decimated the local population. The disruption of the galleon during the British occupation trade is what finally caused the local Spanish officials to consider opening Manila to global trade. The Mexican silver cycle having ended around 1750 led to the end of the galleon trade and the initial exploration of local agricultural products for the export markets.

Lets examine your comment shall we? "We where already christianized" We - Noun Where - Describes place (Adjective) Already - before or by now or the time in question. Christianized - Made a christian Here's where you gone wrong. "Where" is obviously wrong since it implies the location, not time. Here's where we're right, "were" is a past tense of the verb "are". "We're" is a combination of two words "We" and "Are". See the difference? It has an apostrophe in the middle (We're) signifying that it is indeed, two words. You can't argue with facts. "Elementary my dear Watson."
