The thing I learned about pharmacy is there no jobs coming out of school .... 😢
DFM DFM (9 месяцев назад)
Switch to a degree that people respect.
just a random gal (7 месяцев назад)
DFM DFM I understand allowing a PA or NP to do that, but not someone without further qualifications. If they want to have a pharmacy equivalent to a NP or PA, they need further training.
just a random gal (7 месяцев назад)
I think it is a little late for her to do that, but I think I get your point. My sister went to pharmacy school and really wanted to do hospital pharmacy. She did everything she could to make herself competitive, but did not match. She also could not pick up and move anywhere for a residency because her husband had his own research career as a Ph.D chemist and she already had kids. Luckily, she managed to eventually get a job in drug safety with a pharmaceutical company, but it was hard going. However, her line of work does not require a PharmD or even a terminal degree for that matter. It mainly requires a life science/healthcare background. Does it make her a more desirable candidate? Yes it does. It probably helped her get a few promotions too, but it is not a hard requirement for her line of work.

what school did you go to?
Cosric Khan (1 год назад)
Excellent advice my dear friend. I'm a first year Pharmacy School student and I am so thankful for this video you posted. Thank you for your advice and input. I don't know what your hardest Pharmacy school class was but mine is Calculations. So, I'm open to any advice you have for that particular class. Anyways, I do hope you're doing great
Robyn (1 год назад)
Awesome advice! all these things you mention are true, time flies and time is of the essence and it sure is true to take care of yourself. Good luck to those applying to pharmacy school, just be prepared for everything to go fast paced!
Michaela Sattaur (1 год назад)
Is pharmacy school mostly memorization? What is the breakdown on the way they teach you? Or is it like when learning organic chemistry or physics?
zynab1234 (1 год назад)
ill be going into pharm school this fall and this is very helpful

Hey how many statistics classes do pharmacists have to take in pharmacy school? Do you have to take Design of Experiments, or Regression Methods classes etc.?
Linda P (2 года назад)
Thank you for sharing. That sounds very interesting!
Gib Gob (2 года назад)
Did you ever hear about the "REPLICATION CRISIS"? People compare it to the financial crisis of 2008. Look up the wikipedia article on that. That is probably one of the most valuable things you will ever learn if you are ever dealing with or interpreting research! Did they ever mention the replication crisis in any of your classes? Also look up the video on youtube called : "Everything wrong with statistics (and how to fix it)" Probably one of the most informative videos you will ever watch.
Linda P (2 года назад)
In pharmacy school I have taken 1 so far and it was mostly about statistical analysis and interpreting research articles. I had to take one stats class as part of my pre-requisites for pharmacy school.

Sierra Ann (2 года назад)
Hey you're amazing!!💕 but um, is pharmacy mostly biology or chemistry? bcs I love chemistry but I don't really like bio so yeah just wondering if pharmacy is the right choice.. 😘
Dr IfePlumz (6 месяцев назад)
Sierra Ann Same thing applies with me. I prefer Chemistry to Biology. I later realized the two subjects are really needed. I had to change my mindset . Thanks for this video. It's amazing.
Linda P (2 года назад)
It's mostly biology but you do need to be good at both. Don't let that be the reason you don't do pharmacy. You can still be a great pharmacist! :) Good luck!
Michelle Mimay (2 года назад)
Thank you! I am applying right now and this is very helpful!
Michelle Mimay (2 года назад)
You too!  Thank you for this! I appreciate the advice!

Jenny Z (2 года назад)
Hi, i have a question. Did you take physics back in high school? and do you use it in pharmacy school.
Jenny Z (2 года назад)
ohh thanks!
Linda P (2 года назад)
+Jenny Z Actually I didn't take physics in high school but I took it physics 1 and physics 2 in college. So far, we've lightly touched on the basic principle of physics, but we haven't done anything with calculating any physics math problems. It's very good to have a general insight of physics because pharmacy school professors will expect you to know general terms and the basics.

Matea B (3 года назад)
This video was quite helpful, thank you. Could you please tell me, for how long do I need to ''work'' or ''volunteer'' in a pharmacy before getting into college? For how long did you work? Your answer would help me a lot.
Linda P (2 года назад)
+Matea B I volunteered for 8 months and worked for about 2.5 years. I don't think the timeframe matters, pharmacy schools just want to know what you are getting your self into. They want to see you really know what a pharmacist does, and that you're not going into the field because with no purpose.
justine claire galang (3 года назад)
I just wish i saw this before i started my first semester...

did you work in a pharmacy as a volunteer? or you actually got a job in the pharmacy? thanks for your help! im currently undergrad.
Linda P (2 года назад)
+TimelapseKing 004 No, right now you would be hired as a pharmacy technician but when you get accepted, you would be promoted to an intern. Then you would be doing more of an internship for that company rather than just working there as a tech.
Nick (3 года назад)
oh so i dont need to be in pharmacy school to get a part time job at a pharmacy?  im applying next year to pharmacy school. So i could get a part time job at a pharmacy currently?
Linda P (3 года назад)
+GoproMan 004 Both! I first volunteered then I was ready to get serious so I applied at a different pharmacy and got a part time job.

Are there many people with children that are in Pharmacy school? Are you friends with any to now how they're doing? I know everyone is different but Pharmacy school is a lot and I know I can do it with children but will like to hear it from a student with children
Linda P (3 года назад)
+Shateya4 Good luck!
Shateya4 (3 года назад)
+Linda P Thank you, I will continue. This is something I really want to do.
Linda P (3 года назад)
The best thing I would recommend to do is take the pre-requisites and see how you feel with those classes + kids. Have you already taken the pre-reqs? If you have not, I would try out a semester and see how you feel. I am in my second year now and I feel like this year the material is much more difficult and the content is much faster than it was last year. It all really depends on how much help you have from family. Just to give you an idea, I am currently taking about 18 credit hours per semester. This year, we have weekly exams so I spend my entire weekend preparing for that one exam, plus about 2-3 quizzes a week. Like I said, some of my classmates are doing it with the help of a spouse/ family. I don't want to intimidate you from entering the field, but the work load is almost the same as that of a medical/ dental school.
Shateya4 (3 года назад)
thank you for getting back with me!!! My kids are in school, do you think that may help some since their a "little" independent to do things on their own. Also, do you think that Pharmacy school is hard as some may say?
Linda P (3 года назад)
+Shateya4 I don't have kids but some of my classmates do. Some of them even work and have kids. I can't do either. Props to them! I think it's all about having help and support. Some of them study when their kids sleep or nap... others take them to grandma/grampa's house. Sometimes one parent stays home or has a part time job while the other studies and goes to school. Pharmacy school is an investment and sacrifice. You give up 4 years of an income to make a yearly income for the rest of your life that is twice as much (or more) that you are making now. Also, it depends if your kids are in school or toddlers... If you have the right support, I think you can do it!
The Pretty Poems X (3 года назад)
Hey girl! omgosh I can't believe that was four months ago....an update on the cvs....it never went though. I followed up on wednesday, and it was like chasing a myth - it turned out there wasn't an open position. when i spoke to the pharmacist, who looked like a hard person to work for, he told me that he barely had enough hours to give to his employees now. And that I should try a larger city....sad to say, I gave up on myself for a bit. The fear of failure really got to me. Who was I to think I was good enough to work in the back? Im a waitress at a tex-mex resturant, and I'm so unhappy. I pulled out the red certificate out of my closet, I have a year left to try to get certified. Before I go and apply for open positions, I want to study study study. I can't find the website you gave me, do you happen to remember what it's called?
Linda P (2 года назад)
Hope you're doing well! Best of luck!
The Pretty Poems X (3 года назад)
actually, that's the website! sorry for my late response. i'm very rusty on math, but i feel confident that if i sit down i could learn dosage calculations on my own. do you think it's a waste of money to buy a book on medical dosage calculations, accompanied by any of these text books? http://www.howtobecomeapharmacytech.org/top-5-ptcb-study-guides-2015/#.Vcnj6PlmrpJ
Linda P (3 года назад)
+samantha malave Hi Samantha! That's ok, don't worry. I'm sure there are more pharmacies in your area you can apply do. Don't give up! Right now, just focus and try to get certified! Have any of you even looked at the saturation in this field? There are no jobs! CVS & Walgreens will run you into the ground and you will stand for 12-14 hrs with no breaks.....DO NOT go into pharmacy.....Look into a PA program or Nurse Practioner where you will be respected and be able to get a job.
Linda P (3 года назад)
+David P That's a chance I'm willing to take. Thank you for your advice.
David P (3 года назад)
Well, I am not a tech so that little statement is not revelant to my statement. There are always tech jobs but there are very, very few Pharmacist jobs. Say what you want, but an intelligent person would call recruiters to learn the truth about the future of pharmacists before they jump in. There are no jobs and in 10 yrs Kiosks will replace what few jobs there are. You will not be making statements like you are when you get out in the real world.
Linda P (3 года назад)
+Hula Shack Everyone has their own opinion and I respect that. I choose the profession for many reasons. It also depends if you are looking at jobs for a pharmacist or a pharmacy technician.

Hello Linda im a Junior in high school and I want to become a pharmacist but im terrible at math though I love the study of medicine and chemistry and biology should  I try will I make it? I love your videos!
Linda P (3 года назад)
+Tequila Castillo Thank you Tequilla! If you watched my other video about why I choose my biology degree, this should answer your question. I was the most average student with an average ACT score and I still made it in. When I a Junior in high school, I asked myself the same question. As long as you have this goal, focus your eye on the prize, work really hard in your math and science classes, and you could be next! I was really bad at math too, but I thought of every math class like that nasty cough medicine my mom made me take when I was sick... this is the only way I'll get better. Those math classes may be difficult, but getting through them is the only way you can get in Pharmacy School!

Hey Linda, how are the exams in pharmacy school? Does it center around physiological concepts or subjects from pre-pharmacy coursework? How are the times in pharmacy school? is it like 8 to 3?
Linda P (3 года назад)
+dbreardon Wow, I need to review some concepts before I start my second year. Thanks for the advice!
dbreardon (3 года назад)
+Yaseen Arsalan Learn and understand physiology. All drugs simply effect normal physiological processes....drugs don't do any miraculous. KEEP your physiology book for goodness sake. I'm a professor in pharmacy school. I have a Ph.D. and teach the first and second (P1 & P2) classes which are primarily basic science courses (biochem, immuno, physiology, pharmacology).

Thanks for the video. Question: 1)Does this information apply to being a pharmacist or pharmacy tech? 2) Does the information apply to Canada? (if you know)  Criticism = your voice is very quiet in the vid in comparison to the opening music.
Linda P (3 года назад)
1. This is mostly just for pharmacy school students, obtaining PharmD degrees. 2. Since most pharmacy schools have the same basic requirements, I say that this advice is the same for almost all pharmacy schools, especially knowing top 200 drugs and time management!  Criticism- Sorry, I'm still working on fixing that.
The Pretty Poems X (3 года назад)
Hi Ms. Linda! I have a question - now i'm interested in starting my career in pharmacy. i really really have a burning desire to see if this could be for me. But, I don't really know how I should go start, I always tackle things with a definite plan but when it comes to mapping out a course of action I'm a little confused pretaining to a pharmacy technician. In my state, I have a red certificate which means i can be a trainee. Yunno how you can work for CVS or Walgreens and they have a program that helps you train and you can become a certified pharmacy technician if you pass the state exam...should i go down that path or should i enroll myself in a technical school and get it that way? Most of my friends work at CVS or a local pharmacy and they are certified but they didn't need to spend a year or so in school. Um, i guess my question is should i be enrolling in a college or should i take the path and try to do the job? do you know what i mean? why do people go to school if they can just study and take the test? i hope to hear back and i really am not trying to deprive you of your time, this topic means a lot to me. i'm trying to leave my job as a waitress (:
Linda P (3 года назад)
HI Samantha! Sorry it took me so long to reply. Just finished another busy week in school. So for this problem, you have some conversions to do and stoichiometry. I'll try my best to explain. So to break it down, the SIG translated into 2 drops in both eyes every 4 hours, which means 4 drops in 4 hours... and 24 drops in 1 day. Also remember that there are 20 drops for every 1 mL. (20 drops= 1mL) So the question wants the dose in mg... and there are 3mg for every 1 mL. (3mg/1mL X 1mL/20 dropsX 24 drops/day)= 3.6 mg/ day If you write out the part in parenthesis and cancel out the mL with mL, and 20 drops with 24 drops, you are left with mg/ day. In this case, the patient is taking 3.6 mg every day. This question has lots of work but I suggest decoding the sig first, then finding conversions for mL, drops, etc, and then plugging it all in. Hope this helps! Any update on the interview?
The Pretty Poems X (3 года назад)
+samantha malave i actually deciphered most of this myself. lol. The question was, for conjunctivitis, a patient was prescribed the following eye drops: Ciloxan 3mg/mL SIG: ii gtts OU q4h  what strength of ophthalmic solution should be dispensed? Is there a way you could show me how to plug these numbers into an equation? The site doesn't break down problems, and i am just really rusty. There's ratios involved in this, isn't there?
The Pretty Poems X (3 года назад)
+Linda P Thanks sooo much for your feedback. It means a lot to me. This job would prove so much to me. I don't own a blazer that fits me, lol but i paired a chocolate brown pencil skirt with nude heels and a blush colored top. I went to the site you gave me and wrote down the conversions and abbreviations. I'm going to try to memorize them before I go to see if they reviewed my app. I tried a practice test and felt obliterated, defeated. I deciphered it the best i could, but is this what I am going to see as a pharmacy tech trainee? Here was a question: a patient was prescribed the following eye drops: CILOXAN 3mg/mL    SIG: ii gtts OU q4h       and it's asking for a percentage.... :( I know OU means Both Eyes, SIG means RX directions, and the roman numerals mean 2. But what's "gtts" and "q4h" represent?
Linda P (3 года назад)
+samantha malave Wow, that is great great news! You spoke to the right person for sure! So... what I would do is wait until about Wednesday. If she doesn't call back, maybe she got busy and forgot. Give her some time, but don't let it slide so much that she'll forget who you are. Honestly, I think you did the right thing! You're on the right road. Next, when she calls, be sure to look very professional for an interview. I suggest a nice blazer with dress pants. Maybe nude/ black heels. A skirt would look nice too if you're comfortable with that. Whatever you're wearing, make sure you look comfortable, and show CONFIDENCE! That's something I learned when preparing for my pharmacy school interview. They want to see confidence and passion, which from only 3 messages with you, I know you truly have! Keep me posted and let me know how it goes! Good luck, you got this!!!
The Pretty Poems X (3 года назад)
+Linda P Oh wow you are awesome! I live in Texas, and 6 months ago I got registered to be a trainee, which gives me a red card to let me work in the back of the pharmacy. A friend of mine in florida gave me some metric unit conversions to study, tbh i'm rusty with math. And last friday, i applied to CVS and started praying that my dream job would call me. and guess what? I was waiting on a gentleman who enjoyed my service, felt i was very "proper," and i confessed that i wanted to work at a retail store like CVS. the guy turned out to be a district manager for CVS!! he made a phone call, and a woman called me from the CVS store, asking if I had put in applications for the position. She called me on Wednesday, and it's Saturday. She said she'd call me back for an interview, but i have not heard from her. :( I'm mildly freaking out. Do you think she's been too busy to set up an interview? Maybe she'll call this Monday? Anything you say most likely will console me. lol. Thanks so much for the link to the website, i'm DEF checking it out.

Honestly, I love makeup and looking like a girl... but I also want to work in the healthcare field. I don't think I could do makeup for a living because it's just a "hobby". I've thought about going to cosmetology school after pharmacy school, so you never know! :D I have a video on your last question...  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VyvAHmLLOwY I think this will answer your question.
