To interviewer - Hi sir You do a lot of stuff daily, right? But have you ever made different decision? A decision that is not normal? That will remain in your memories forever? So i have this opportunity for you to take a different decision today. You might be using a pen better than what i am offering, but think about making this decision of buying a pen during an interview. You cannot deny the fact that this will be there in your memory forever that you bought a pen while taking a job interview. This would be my answer. Very important thing about selling anything anywhere in this world is - Customers never identify good or bad in first go because its the manufacturing company or the owner who knows the process, R&D and all stuff behind the product. Customer purchase on the basis emotions. In child hood we use to have this magic pencil that a boy uses in a show to get what he desires...what happened we convinced our parents to that pencil for us anyhow, just on the emotional connect that yes this was similar to what was shown in that TV Show.

Don't sell them a pen, sell them THAT pen. But above all else, you're not selling a pen per say; you're selling your abilities to sell the pen. Find out how often they use pens, what they use it for, how often they can even remember the brand of the pens they use. You need to find out what, why, and how. Only then can you convince them to buy your product. For example, if they're a manager, they likely use pens a LOT; and they're probably using them to sign deals, business paperwork, contracts, agreements, amendments, etc etc. Meaning you should then start feeding into their requirement for a pen that serves their job purpose. If their job is in sales, then the pen is one of the most important aspects of their career. So convince them so. Convince them that the pen is one of the most important tools of their job and that YOUR pen is the pen that is the one they need serve as their divine tool.

The best way to seel the pen is to not focus on the attributes of the pen. It's to ask questions first. Ask how are they going to be using the pen, are you looking for the least expensive model, or do you want to pay a little extra to get something more durable? Is this pen just going to be for yourself, or will everyone in your department need one? We also have a wide variety of other office equipment, once we decide on the pen, we should look at some other products that might be helpful.

this is how I would sell it "just imagine you are signing off on a buisness deal, this has been your goal for a while now. You're dressed up in a nice suit and tie and when you bring out a pen to sign off on your new greatest success. This pen is a little chewed up, the clicker doesnt work on the first try. You try to sign your name but when it doesnt write, you have to shamedly scribble on another paper to get the ink flowing. You finally sign your name and everything is ok, but was that professional? what kind of impression did you leave. Now I want you to imagine the same situation but you, in confidence, pull out this pen, its well designed, you know it will work. You click the ballpoint out, and you sign your name without even looking. You know it works. With the help of this seemingly simple pen, everyone in the room was impressed and your confidence is still in one piece."

I would ask the customer which pen is he using.. Think about an advertisement.. Pick up a few pain points about the product since every product has a pain point and then throw the USP(unique selling point) at the customer and tell him it would not be a liability for him but would be an asset.. Be it a pen or any product.. This would help.. 😄

Sounds like whoever that 'sales manager' has never been in a truly competitive sales environment and sold phone book ads in the 80s. Today's sales market is all about consultative selling, you were the better sales person in that meeting and are lucky you didn't get that job.

Kenneth is on the right track! Consultative sales or value based selling in a nut shell is asking the customer in depth questions that can uncover opportunities for you to position your product. For example, " in your day to day business operations how often do you use your pen?" potential buyer: " I use it everyday to take notes and sign legal documents." Sales person: " when you're taking notes is it typically in a meeting?" customer response yet, sales: " have you ever interrupted a business meeting because your pen broke, ran out of ink or you just forgot it ?" etc.... As a true consultative sales person you want to ask the right questions, if you do this, the customer will sell themselves. I highly recommend Challenger Sales as well as Spin Selling.

Rap God I gave the same approach and answered the question in an interview. But that person rejected me and I asked him why.... ; He answered me " you need to admire and present features and beauty of this pen" ; I reply him back politely - " Sir, This concept of doing sales would have worked in 80's but in current generation if you approach your target showcasing you as sales guy with product in hand, he wouldn't be standing there to even lesson to you."
